Great post, Christian! Swiss Hiking is the best in the world, as their worst hiking is better than the best hiking here in Southern California. And the Swiss hiking trails are so well maintained by SAW, it's a joy to hike there, as the signs always inspire you to go faster and farther and to new destinations you'd never know existed. As the other poster mentioned, I'd bring chocolate over a compass, as getting lost is almost impossible. Also, the SAW signs always have the destination and direction, and often estimate the walking time to get there. I like to call them Swiss Granny Times and at a good steady hiking pace with a few brief rests, you can cut those times in half. It's a fun challenge, because the Swiss Grannies are in great shape and could win any Olympic Track Event for people in their age category. All the best, Horrible Ray

Is it really an island in the store (you had to cross a moat?) just for chocolate, or is it actually an aisle?

You're quite right. My favourite alternatives to chocolate are Appenzeller Biberli, Birnenbrot, and Bündner Nusstorte – also packed with energy and easy to carry. Bonus is that they don't melt.

You forgot to say bring chocolate! Lots of energy that takes up little space in your rucksack. My father-in-law believes that during hikes is the only time one can safely ingest so many calories at once. :)

There's also Frauenfeld's worst-kept secret, Sigg. For years, a Siggie bottle has been my go-to gift when sending home to friends in the UK - but I've noticed them on sale in England now, so I've lost my prized pressie, boo!
