SUMMARY:"The Sound of Charlie Chaplin" at Chaplin's World in Vevey
DESCRIPTION:We are fond of Chaplin's World\, the only museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin. \nWhile we do not need a particular reason to visit Chaplin's World again\, 2020 brings a number of temporary exhibits that we do not want to miss. \nAbout "The Sound of Charlie Chaplin"\nWhat all of these exhibits and events have in common: they celebrate the music of Charlie Chaplin. We will be able to experience Charlie Chaplin as an artist\, composer and musician. \nStarting in March\, the temporary exhibition "The Sound of Charlie Chaplin" will be housed in the Manoir de Ban at Chaplin's World. \nThere\, we will have an opportunity to rediscover Chaplin's fascinating musical side and rhythmic work through rare archives\, interactive installations and an immersive audiovisual experience with ambitious arrangements. \nThe access to the temporary exhibition is included in Chaplin's World entrance fee. \nLet Chaplin's music move you!\nMore information

SUMMARY:Let's play! An exhibit about the history of video games
DESCRIPTION:(Key visual copyright Swiss National Museum/Roli Hofer) \nPacman\, Tetris and Super Mario Bros. are names that bring up memories. Yet just a couple of decades ago\, video games were looked at as a gimmick. \nThis spring\, the Swiss National Museum in Zürich is dedicating a temporary exhibit to the history of video games. \nAs one of the world's top leisure activities\, video games have surely established themselves in popular culture. (Globally\, some 2.5 billion people play video games!) The evolution from Commodore 64 to today's virtual reality experiences in cyberspace is remarkable. \nThis exhibit looks at the 50-years old history of electronic games\, giving visitors lots of opportunities to get hands on. When is the last time you played Pacman? Personally\, I cannot wait to see this exhibit and get my game on... Who knows? I might even start to spend my lunch hours there! \nTest your skills in this browser based game especially developed for the exhibit. \nOpening hours: Tue - Sun 10 AM to 5 PM\, Thu 10 AM to 7 PM\, closed on Mon \nMore information \n \n(All photographs copyright Swiss National Museum)

SUMMARY:photoSCHWEIZ is coming back to Zürich in 2020
DESCRIPTION:Once the holiday dust has settled and the new year has kicked off\, we are always glad to find inspiration at photoSCHWEIZ. \nYou may remember the previous editions of Switzerland's largest photography exhibit\, such as photo19. In 2020\, the organizers have rebranded the exhibit to simply photoSCHWEIZ. \nMore than 300 photographers will be displaying their best works\, whereby 200 photographs will be part of the regular exhibit. The remaining pieces will be spread among 18 special exhibitions covering everything from documentary to nature photography. \nOne such exhibit is entitled "Doomed Paradise"\, a long term documentation of the rain forests of Borneo. Photographer Tomas Wüthrich has traveled there multiple times in order to visit with local residents who are fighting deforestation. I am particularly interested in this show because the recent feature film\, Paradise War\, about Bruno Manser\, has brought the Penan people back into popular consciousness. \nphotoSCHWEIZ workshops\nThose who want to further their photography skills or are considering a career as a photographer should look into the 120 workshops. Topics range from travel photography to aerial photography (held in English). \nphotoSCHWEIZ is open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM and tickets are available online.\n \n(Photograph copyright Ruth Spiller/photoSCHWEIZ)

SUMMARY:Pong! The Vintage Computer Festival is coming back to Zürich
DESCRIPTION:Vintage computer festivals are held across the world. And once again this November\, there's one coming back to Zürich! \nRelive the home computer years\, but also experience computers from from the 1950's to the 1970's. Remember the blinked rows of lights on massive front panels\, hidden in research labs\, universities and big companies? There is no admission for kids\, and they will be well catered for with a large Vintage Gaming section. \nExhibitors (both private collectors and museums) have made great efforts to engage families with children\, and not just computer enthusiasts\, with a varied\, fun but also educational experience. As it turns out\, a big computer from 1970 is not so hard to understand for people today. \nThe event is hosted in the Rote Fabrik at Seestrasse 395. \nFollow them on Twitter or check out the photo gallery from 2016.

SUMMARY:The third annual Le Salon du Design is coming back to Geneva
DESCRIPTION:Geneva's first 20th century design fair\, Le Salon du Design\, is coming back for a third edition. \nThis year\, the participating shops and galleries will be highlighting 100 years of design history. We expect the Le Salon du Design to be quite an experience as it showcases on postmodern furniture\, Bauhaus styles\, Scandinavian design and vintage design from Switzerland\, Italy and France. Visitors will have the chance to step through time and space in this exhibit that places quality over quantity. \nOne of the highlights will surely be the fiberglass shells made famous by Charles and Ray Eames. But we are also excited about the exhibition featuring (and selling) the most iconic productions of Swiss design. \nThe organic architecture of the Pavillon Sicli\, designed in the 1960s by Heinz Isler\, offers the ideal setting for authentic pieces from the 1920s to 1985. Swiss and international dealers are holding their most beautiful finds for the visitors of Le Salon du Design in Geneva as a preview of the major European events that will be held later on. \nTickets are 5 francs for those above 12 years of age. The exhibit is open as follows: Sat from 10 AM to 8 PM\, Sun from 10 AM to 6 PM. \n(Both photographs copyright Corine Stübi/Le Salon du Design)

SUMMARY:Heidi in Japan - Swiss National Museum in Zürich
DESCRIPTION:アルプスの少女ハイジ or "Arupusu no Shōjo Haiji": this is the title of the 1974 anime series that put the Swiss Alps on the map for many Japanese. \nIt is a story we all know too well: orphaned mountain girl is taken to the city yet yearns for the alps. Ever since the end of the 19th century\, Heidi has been conquering the world. But it was not until the release of the cartoon "Heidi\, Girl of the Alps" in Japan that Heidi turned into a global phenomenon. \nThe makers of the animated series went on to co-found the world-famous Studio Ghibli\, creator of numerous films and series. Now through October 13\, 2019\, the Swiss National Museum in Zürich is dedicating an exhibition to Heidi. The focus lies on the fusion of the Swiss and Japanese culture\, as well as on the evolution of the anime series. \n\n  \n"Heidi in Japan" Focus Day on Friday\, Aug 30\nFrom 9 AM to 4:30 PM\, the Swiss National Museum along with the University of Zurich will be hosting an exciting series of events. Among other things\, the University's Institute of Art History studies the Japanese view of Switzerland. The idealized image of Switzerland in the popular animated film series\, "Heidi\, Girl of the Alps"\, has contributed significantly to shaping that view. \nDuring this focus day\, you will get to discuss interesting questions such as "would Johanna Spyri still recognize her Heidi today?" or "can translations change a character?" More than 40 years after its release\, the idyllic images of nature and the Swiss mountains in the anime film still evoke a sense of yearning in many Japanese. \nAnd there will be a musical treat to complement the event: Switzerland's Schwarz Family will have an appearance - they have recorded the original soundtrack of the cartoon series without understanding a word of Japanese! \nActivities for children: Check out this nifty sheet with Heidi games or this printable cut-out activity. \nOpening hours: Tue - Sun 10 AM to 5 PM\, Thu 10 AM to 7 PM\, closed on Mon (guided tours including food tasting every other Saturday) \nMore information \n(All photographs copyright Swiss National Museum)

SUMMARY:photo19 kicks off Zürich's year of events
DESCRIPTION:This January\, there is a particular event we look forward to the most: photo19. \nIt is always fascinating to view such a wide variety of photographs which were produced by amateurs and professionals alike. From advertising to fashion photography\, and from documentary shots to portraits: photo19 is promising to take us on a journey to places near and far. \nWhile the more than 250 photographers are both national and international\, we always enjoy the honest looks at Switzerland. (We are Newly Swissed\, after all.) Whatever your taste\, go with the flow as visitors meander among the exhibit displays. Keep in mind that all photographs have either been produced at one point during 2018 or have never before been published. Those who are deeper into photography will enjoy photoFORUM\, a podium where renowned photographers share their insights. Or how about picking up some new skills at photoSCHOOL? \nThe venues of photo19 are conveniently located just steps from the Zürich-Oerlikon train station. photo19 will be open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM.

SUMMARY:grafikSCHWEIZ 18 is Switzerland's graphic design exhibit
DESCRIPTION:There is no better place to get a feel for Switzerland's long history of graphic design than at grafikSCHWEIZ 18. \nThis annual gathering for graphic design\, new media\, games and virtual reality has established itself over the years and we always enjoy going there. With some 130 different national and international artists exhibiting\, it is always a feast for the eyes. From icon design to typography and illustration\, the invited talents will show off their most innovative and relevant body of work. One of the criteria is that works have to have been produced within the prior year. \nIn the past\, we have enjoyed grafikSCHWEIZ for its interactive exhibits such as a drawing wall where visitors were able to express themselves. Oftentimes\, artists are present and eager to answer questions\, adding more depth to this unmissable event. \nHighlights during grafikSCHWEIZ 18\nThis year\, look out for David Boller\, an illustrator who has previously worked for renowned publishers such as Marvel or DC Comics. Along with Michel Fornasier\, he will be unveiling a comic series entitled "Bionicman". \ngrafikSCHWEIZ 18 will be staged at the formerly industrial Halle 622 in Zürich-Oerlikon. The exhibit will be open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM.

SUMMARY:KLM World Business Class at Zurich Airport (Sponsored)
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to designing large\, fully horizontal beds for an airline business class\, it makes sense to trust the Dutch. \nThe Dutch airline KLM did just that when it recently completed an overhaul of their fleet's business class. With a country as flat as the Netherlands and some of the tallest people on the planet\, the Dutch designers pulled off a very nice refresh. \nPrivacy and comfort\nThe goal was to create individual spaces at the intersection of privacy and comfort. Instead of going full out on materials and gimmicks\, renowned Dutch designer\, Hella Jongerius\, did just the opposite: she managed to simplify the cabin while at the same time enriching it with warm colors and sustainable materials. Take the carpet: it was woven using recycled materials\, including actual KLM flight attendant uniforms and Norwegian sheep wool which would otherwise have been discarded. \n \nThe designer is quoted as saying: "Feeling comfortable is not the same as experiencing comfort. The understanding that it's all about the emotional state of a passenger lets you cover a much bigger world than just designing soft seats. My aim was to convert the business class into a feel-at-home class." \nApart from an inflight entertainment system boasting more than 1000 hours of Blockbusters\, documentaries and TV series screened on 17 inch displays\, gourmands will be in for a treat\, too. In fact\, it may simply be worth transferring onto a long-haul flight in Amsterdam\, because KLM World Business Class serves meals designed by top Dutch chefs. \nWhether hot or cold\, savory or sweet\, healthy or feel-good: no less than five in-between meals are waiting on standby during the entire flight! That's in addition to the usual three-course dinner and lunch options... Think Italian salad with Serrano ham and Parmigiano Reggiano on a balsamic vinaigrette! \nTry out KLM World Business Class at Zurich Airport\nThrough November 5\, 2018\, KLM will be exhibiting seat models of its World Business Class at Zurich Airport (Airport Center). On the spot\, you can try them out and convince yourself of the comfort of fully flat seats and the feel-good atmosphere in the long-distance cabins of the Dutch airline. There is even a kind flight attendant who will take a Polaroid photograph! \nNow\, enter to win 1x2 World Business Class flights to either Miami\, Mauritius or Rio de Janeiro!

SUMMARY:World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:It is the time of year when the world's best press photographs are on display in Zürich. \nWorld Press Photo is an exhibit that shows the world through the lens of press photographers. The courageous men and women are there when a crisis takes place\, capturing humanity during its weakest moments. Be it the unfolding of the refugee crisis\, wars and conflicts\, social issues or protests\, press photographers are on site to document the events unfolding and to share these impressions with the rest of us. \n\n  \nThis year\, new forms of photo and video journalism will supplement the World Press Photo Exhibition.\nThe following are some first-hand impressions captured by our own press photographer\, Cloudia Chen\, when she attended a media preview. The tour was narrated by Mr. Jerzy Brinkhof\, the curator of World Press Photo\, as well as Mrs. Magdalena Herrera\, President of the World Press Photo jury and Director of Photography at GEO France. \n \n \n \nMore information about World Press Photo Exhibition 2018. All photography are copyright Cloudia Chen.

SUMMARY:Take a 3D Selfie at the TWINSIE Lab in Zürich
DESCRIPTION:How many selfies have you snapped this week? Thought so! \nIn order to take a selfie of a different kind\, we recently visited a new pop-up gallery in Zürich. Run by ifolor\, the Swiss family business that has been printing our photographs for nearly sixty years\, the TWINSIE technology is a step into the future. That's because a TWINSIE is a selfie on Steroids: It is a photo-realistic miniature replica in 3D! \nThanks to the latest 3D printing technique and the patient artists at ifolor in Kreuzlingen\, we will soon receive a package with our own Mini Me's. The printing process for each miniature model takes anywhere from eight to twelve hours. The scale is 1:10\, so about 17 cm in height for myself. And finally\, thanks to an extreme level of detail with some 390'000 color shades\, I expect my miniature self to be as realistic as can be. \n\n  \nThe TWINSIE Pop-up Gallery by ifolor\nThe location of the TWINSIE pop-up gallery is just a few steps from Zürich's Viadukt market. There\, the renowned interior designer\, Martina Nievergelt\, has created an abstract world consisting of whitewashed furniture and accessories. A small tribe of 3D printed figurines is nestled in between the lamps and picture frames\, making this a fun place for discovery. \nAt the center of the room\, there is a large photo booth boasting some 68 individual cameras. Based on our height\, these cameras will record several different positions for each participant. So you could play around by striking a pose or simply looking straight ahead. \n \nIt is free of charge to step into the photo booth and have your pictures taken. A short while later\, you will receive access to see your shots online\, from where you can decide to place an order. The introductory price is 149 francs plus shipping. \nThe 3D pop-up lab at Limmatstrasse 285 is open Mondays through Fridays from noon to 8 PM\, Saturdays from noon to 5 PM. Learn more and reserve your time slot before the end of March. \n(All photographs copyright ifolor)

SUMMARY:The first public showing of GURLITT "Confiscated Art" (Bern)
DESCRIPTION:The Kunstmuseum Bern and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn are simultaneously presenting a selection of items from the "Gurlitt art trove". \nThis is a big deal because for the first time\, these pieces of art are shown to the public. Here is the backstory: The collection was discovered due to tax investigations in 2012. Then in 2014\, Cornelius Gurlitt\, who was the son of the German art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt\, left 1500 works to the Kunstmuseum Bern. It was an unexpected move\, and the art museum has been working together with the German Lost Art Foundation to identify the original owners. \nThe museums are focusing on different aspects of the collection. The exhibition in Bern is showing 160 works which were classified as "Degenerate Art" by the National Socialists. The exhibit examines the political processes and historical events that led to the confiscation and condemnation of modern art. Particular attention is paid to the fate of the blacklisted and prosecuted artists as well as to the life of Hildebrand Gurlitt - in all its contradictions. \nIn the "Studio Provenane Research"\, visitors can discover the methods and the challenges of provenance research. My advice: Do not miss the SRF documentary "Gurlitts Schatten" which is being screened at the exhibition. It gives an insight into the exceptional story of the "Gurlitt art trove". \nGet more information or download the exhibition guide.

SUMMARY:Open doors at the Lohn Government Residence (Kehrsatz)
DESCRIPTION:Let us share a small secret with you... \nThere is a hidden estate near Bern where such authorities as Queen Elisabeth\, Fidel Castro and W. Churchill used to stay overnight when visiting Bern. Twice a year\, it opens its doors to the public. \nInside the Lohn Government Residence in Kehrsatz\nThe small Lohn estate might look humble from the outside\, but it is adorned with exuberant rooms and hides rich history. Once a countryside residence for a wealthy Bernese family\, now it serves the Swiss government as a peaceful meeting point for hosting politicians and royals. \nDuring the day of open doors\, you can walk around the guest house which until 1994 used to host many world-renown political figures. You can visit the rooms they have stayed at where meetings were held. An introductory video will tell you interesting facts about the property\, and at 3 PM you can even join a free tour. \nThe much photographed Béatrice-von-Wattenwyl-Haus in Bern's old town serves a similar purpose and opens its doors four times a year. \nOur advice: Talk to the employees of the Lohn estate. They know curious stories and have been there when some exclusive guests with their presence for a short time have turned the house into one of the most important venues in Bern - if not in the whole of Switzerland.

SUMMARY:Monet at Fondation Beyeler (Riehen)
DESCRIPTION:I have first encountered Claude Monet's works at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. \nThe wealth and variety of Monet's impressionist art has left a mark on me. Alas\, I was thrilled to learn that the Fondation Beyeler is devoting an exhibit to this important painter. Being one of the key artists in their permanent collection\, the museum will be shedding light on selected aspects of Monet's work. \nThose who pilgrimage to Riehen near Basel before May 28 will enjoy over 60 works of art\, summoned from museums and private collections the world over.\nThe selection focuses on the years after 1880 to the onset of the 20th century\, a period when famous paintings such as Houses of Parliament and the water lilies series were born. \nOn select days\, Fondation Beyeler is opening its doors to those early risers who want to soak in Claude Monet in tranquility. There is a special curator's tour with a meditation session inside the exhibit halls. \nFor the families among you\, mark your calendars for Sunday\, April 9. From 10 AM to 6 PM\, there will be museum tours tailored to children and teenagers in several languages. Also\, the museum has announced experiments with art and creative workshops\, all of which are included in the admission fee. \nI will leave you with a curious fact: "Monet was baptized as Oscar-Claude\, but his parents called him simply Oscar. Strange that we all call him Claude." \nMore information \n(Sources: Facts about Claude Monet)
