SUMMARY:Monet at Fondation Beyeler (Riehen)
DESCRIPTION:I have first encountered Claude Monet's works at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. \nThe wealth and variety of Monet's impressionist art has left a mark on me. Alas\, I was thrilled to learn that the Fondation Beyeler is devoting an exhibit to this important painter. Being one of the key artists in their permanent collection\, the museum will be shedding light on selected aspects of Monet's work. \nThose who pilgrimage to Riehen near Basel before May 28 will enjoy over 60 works of art\, summoned from museums and private collections the world over.\nThe selection focuses on the years after 1880 to the onset of the 20th century\, a period when famous paintings such as Houses of Parliament and the water lilies series were born. \nOn select days\, Fondation Beyeler is opening its doors to those early risers who want to soak in Claude Monet in tranquility. There is a special curator's tour with a meditation session inside the exhibit halls. \nFor the families among you\, mark your calendars for Sunday\, April 9. From 10 AM to 6 PM\, there will be museum tours tailored to children and teenagers in several languages. Also\, the museum has announced experiments with art and creative workshops\, all of which are included in the admission fee. \nI will leave you with a curious fact: "Monet was baptized as Oscar-Claude\, but his parents called him simply Oscar. Strange that we all call him Claude." \nMore information \n(Sources: Facts about Claude Monet)

SUMMARY:Inside Out by Christina Hoffmann - Contemporary Art Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in more than one culture can be enriching. \nTake Christina Hoffmann: Up until seven years ago\, this up-and-coming artist has spent her life in Germany and Greece. As a bilingual career woman with a background in arts and mathematics\, Christina is a natural when it comes to maneuvering in multiple societies. \nWhen she moved to Zürich in 2009\, Christina Hoffmann arrived with her easel\, an empty canvas and acrylic paint in all the rainbow’s colors. Also\, she brought a bundle of experience in hosting art exhibits. \nWhere is home?\nThose who grew up on the intersection of multiple cultures can probably relate: When it comes to answering life’s big questions\, things can get tricky. \n \nChristina soon began to express her feelings about identity on canvas. Over the years\, she has produced dozens of abstract works dealing with the overarching theme of identity. \nSome of the topics throughout Christina’s art include a yearning for home\, a study on separation and finally\, her personal transformation. \nWe are curious to see the paintings in real life (Christina frequently posts them on her Facebook page). Her latest exhibit opens in Zürich on Sept 15\, and you will definitively find us there! \nRSVP for the opening event on Sept 15 (5 PM open ended) \n(All images copyright by the artist Christina Hoffmann)

SUMMARY:VOLVO ART SESSION 2016 (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Volvo is hosting its fifth Art Session in Zürich on September 15. At the center of the event is the launch of the new Volvo XC90. \nVOLVO ART SESSION is so much more than a car launch. It is a creative multimedia event that includes musical performances\, dance\, film\, and live painting - bridging the analog and digital world. \nThis year's highlight is live painting by Ata Bozaci.\nIn the past four years\, the VOLVO ART SESSION has been held at Zürich's Main Station. The new venue at the Maag Halle will allow this happening to truly flourish as a major art event in Zürich. \nVolvo is also giving visitors a chance to take part in the Art Session with a contest. (The first prize is a weekend in St. Moritz to learn how to drive in icy conditions.) \nGet creative and enter the contest by Sept 11. \n(Feature photograph copyright by aroma.ch)

SUMMARY:Sihlcity Art & Food Market (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:This summer is all about art here in Zürich. \nThe latest event we are excited about is the Art & Food Market at Sihlcity. We already know (and love) the shipping container format from Jungkunst in Winterthur. The idea is that a few hand-picked artists display their creative outputs inside those colorful containers we know from harbors and shipping yards. \nArt\, Food and Live Acts\nHere at Sihlcity in Zürich\, the art containers will belong to talents such as . Or Linda Bernhard\, a Swiss artist based in the UK who skillfully creates fun collages. Linda's nostalgic creations promise to take us back to times when Photoshop was a store selling photo equipment... \n \nThe urban street market highlights start-up organizations and independent labels. We will definitively check out the daily live painting sessions... And did we mention the street food market? One of our favorites\, Palestine Grill\, will be on site with their truck... \nMore information \n(Photograph copyright by Sihlcity)

SUMMARY:Guided Tours at the 24 Stops Rehberger Trail (Basel)
DESCRIPTION:Outdoors and art just got married in Basel. \nWith 24 different art installations along the way\, the new 5 km Rehberger Trail tells stories of the surroundings and introduces to its cultural and natural landscape. \nThe unique trail\, leading you through two countries\, is created by Tobias Rehberger\, one of the most significant contemporary artists in Germany. His 24 Stops walking trail art objects are functional (or the functional objects - artistic\, as he likes to imply) and interactive. \nUntil October\, every second Sunday at 2 PM\, there are free guided tours\, starting at the Fondation Beyeler or the Vitra Design Museum. It takes about two hours and advance registration is required. \n \nThe path is the goal\, as they say. Don’t rush\, slow down and see how the beautiful nature and culture intertwine. \nSee the guided tour dates

SUMMARY:PHOTO LAUNDRY Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Do you remember the pre-digital times when photographs had to be manually developed and hung up to dry? For the second time in Zürich\, PHOTO LAUNDRY is picking up that custom with a very fun photo gallery. \nOn June 5\, photographers of all ages and from all walks of life will come together in an interactive street photo exhibition and exchange. The name PHOTO LAUNDRY hints at the simple concept behind this photo exhibit: Photographers will get a platform to display their projects and will get education on tricks of the trade by industry experts. \nThe exhibition will feature photographs taken on analog and digital cameras. Works will be themed according to four popular genres: Street/urban photography\, landscape/nature photography\, macro photography and abstract photography. \nThe original idea was born in St Petersburg\, Russia\, in 2010. Since then\, similar events have been organized in over 100 Russian cities and in Europe\, attracting more than 45'000 participants. \nTo participate\, bring at least one printed or developed picture to hang on the laundry line. \nThis event is organized by the Photo International Club Zurich (PICZ). Admission is free. \n(Photograph copyright by Michael Gäbler/Wikimedia)

SUMMARY:Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Fair (Basel)
DESCRIPTION:Baselworld is the world's most important watch and jewelry exhibit. \nIn order to get ready for this week long exhibit\, we recommend you take some time to study the two official Baselworld publications: "Stones and Pearls" and "Machines and Supply Industry". The former covers the glitz and glamour of diamonds\, colorful gems and pearls\, while the latter takes a look at each watch manufacturer's company history. \nThis year\, we are especially excited to see the JEANRICHARD Terrascope timepieces in a brand new size. We are told that the two stylish timepieces come in different shades of blue. \nBaselworld is open daily from 9 AM - 6 PM. \n \n(Feature picture copyright by Baselworld)

SUMMARY:Jean Dubuffet at Fondation Beyeler - Guided Tour in English (Basel)
DESCRIPTION:You may not have heard of Jean Dubuffet until now\, but he is one of the defining artists of the latter half of the 20th century. \nThe Fondation Beyeler is dedicating a large scale retrospective to this French painter and sculptor who had left his marks in works from Hockney to Haring. As part of this carefully curated exhibit\, you will get to see Dubuffet's rich and multi-layered body of work. \nThe more than 100 pieces create a unique visual universe which should not be missed. Jean Dubuffet had a particularly fascinating idea of landscape: He thought it could transform itself into a body\, a face or an object. As you will see\, the artist experimented with a variety of techniques and materials\, from sand to butterfly wings. \nTake part of this guided tour in English and add even more value to your museum visit. The Jean Dubuffet exhibit will be on through May 8\, 2016. \n(Photograph/images copyright ProLitteris Zurich/Fondation Beyeler)

SUMMARY:Dada Universal Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:"DADA WAS THERE BEFORE THERE WAS DADA." \nThe radical artistic and literary movement "Dada" was founded in Zürich exactly 100 years ago. Dada gained instant fame around the world\, but what exactly does the word "Dada" imply? \nIs it nonsense and absurdity? Not exactly\, because Dada was a response to the madness of World War I. The Swiss National Museum in Zürich is now holding an exhibit to commemorate this important anniversary: 100 years since the birth of Dadaism. \nThe exhibition not only features works of Dada art and literature\, but also examines the global and universal impact of the Dada movement right up to the present day. Look out for the legendary "Fountain" by Marcel Duchamp\, which is essentially the "Mona Lisa" of Dadaism. And in a whirl through time and space\, the Dada esprit comes alive through objects\, projections and poems\, involving all the human senses. \nBecause: "DADA EST TATOU. TOUT EST DADA." \nCheck out additional Dada events

SUMMARY:photo16 Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Zürich is hosting photo16\, the annual photography exhibit. The event has established itself as Switzerland’s largest showcase of photography. \nThe organizers of photo16 have invited more photographers than ever: 150 professional and amateur artists from the areas of advertising\, art and press will be highlighting their best photographic work. \nWe have never missed a year because we love the setting of the formerly industrial Maag factory. The urban industrial halls create a perfect backdrop for photography. We are super excited that there is a platform for user generated content: The top 100 photographs tagged with #dasischzüri will be displayed. \nAs part of photo16\, the Swiss Photo Academy will be awarding the designation of "Swiss Photographer of the Year". The nominees are Nico Krebs/Taiyo Onorato\, Pascal Mora\, Anne Morgenstern\, Flurina Rothenberger\, and Meinrad Schade. \nAnd finally\, the photoFORUM will host international top photographers such as Christopher Morris. \n(Photography Credit: photo-schweiz.ch)

SUMMARY:Jungkunst Art Exhibit (Winterthur)
DESCRIPTION:For their 10th anniversary\, the Jungkunst art event has commissioned no less than 25 young artists. From sculptors to street art\, this four-day event covers a wide range of artistic expression. \nI am particularly excited about the Container Museum\, an art gallery inside shipping containers. (Freitag brothers\, are you taking note?) I find it exceptional that this established art event features only original pieces. While it is a platform for young artists to be discovered\, it is just as much an opportunity for the public to purchase original art.\n  \nLinda Bernhard at Jungkunst\nAmong the more than two dozen artists is Linda Bernhard\, a life-long friend of mine. The Swiss collage artist is based in the UK\, so I have only been able to see her creations online - until now. Linda's nostalgic creations take us back to times when Photoshop was a store selling photo equipment. Her collages are the product of pure handicraft\, thus standing out in today's digital world. \n \nJungkunst is held at the former industrial halls of Sulzer in Winterthur\, and the organizers have more than a few highlights in store... SUMMARY:The Art of the Brick (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:A former industrial factory in Zürich will be turned into a colorful gallery this fall – brick by brick. \nBut what do Mona Lisa\, Andy Warhol and a T-Rex have in common? American artist Nathan Sawaya has recreated all three\, plus 100 others\, using more than a million colorful LEGO bricks. But if you are expecting a giant playground\, try again. The Art of the Brick features incredibly complex LEGO masterpieces\, created by this former New York attorney. \nAmong them is "Yellow"\, a skillful rendition of a male torso made up of 11‘000 LEGO bricks. \nSawaya has managed to excite visitors of all ages across more than 30 cities around the world. If you have ever caught yourself staring at a pile of LEGO bricks in a toy store\, trying to resist the urge to build something\, this exhibit will be perfect for you... \nMore information and tickets \nThursday\, Dec. 24\, 2015\nClosed \nFriday\, Dec. 25\, 2015\n1 PM - 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \nSaturday\, Dec. 26\, 2015\n10 AM - 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \nThursday\, Dec. 31\, 2015\n10 AM - 4 PM (last admission 3 PM) \nFriday\, Jan. 1\, 2016\n1 PM - 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \nSaturday\, Jan. 2\, 2016\n10 AM - 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \n \n(Photograph copyright by Gregory Williams/Flickr)

SUMMARY:Richard Deacon – On The Other Side (Winterthur)
DESCRIPTION:Kunstmuseum Winterthur is presenting a solo exhibition of the British sculptor Richard Deacon through November 15\, 2015. \nRichard Deacon’s sculptures are created from a variety of materials\, including wood\, metal\, and ceramics\, in organic and created shapes. His sculptures range from the monumental to the miniature\, and are visibly striking. The pieces included in the exhibit have been created over the last decade and show how Deacon has deviated from the usual laws of sculpture. \n \nBorn in Bangor\, Caernarvonshire\, Wales in 1949\, Richard Deacon attended the Somerset College of Art\, Taunton\, Saint Martin’s School of Art\, London\, and the Royal College of Art in London. He lives and works in London\, and is the recipient of the 1987 Turner Prize. \nMore information \n(Photographs copyright by Kunstmuseum Winterthur)

SUMMARY:Swiss Style - International Graphic Design (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Simple graphic design seems to be the trend these days. \nSince we are surrounded by visual opulence\, very simple layouts seem downright spectacular to our eyes. It is due to pioneering work in the 1960's that the international success of Swiss graphic design has been established. \nJoseph Müller-Brockmann\, Karl Gerstner and Armin Hofmann created a reduced design developed under the name "Swiss Style"\, making it a landmark movement which still influences graphic design to this day. \nFurthermore\, European graphic designers such as Wim Crouwel and Massimo Vignelli established minimalist aesthetic worldwide. \nThe latest exhibition at Museum für Gestaltung (Schaudepot) in Zürich highlights the successful distribution of the Swiss Style. The relevance and longevity of Swiss Style are proven through selected contemporary works\, including a critical intervention of the Amsterdam designer trio Experimental Jetset. \nGet ready for this exhibit by checking out our book review of 100 Years of Swiss Design. It is the perfect companion for this exhibit. \n  \nMore Information\n- The exhibition takes place from April 17 to July 26\, 2015.\n- Museum für Gestaltung Website\n- Top 5 Most Influential Swiss Designers on Newly Swissed
