SUMMARY:Dada Universal Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:“DADA WAS THERE BEFORE THERE WAS DADA.” \nThe radical artistic and literary movement “Dada” was founded in Zürich exactly 100 years ago. Dada gained instant fame around the world\, but what exactly does the word “Dada” imply? \nIs it nonsense and absurdity? Not exactly\, because Dada was a response to the madness of World War I. The Swiss National Museum in Zürich is now holding an exhibit to commemorate this important anniversary: 100 years since the birth of Dadaism. \nThe exhibition not only features works of Dada art and literature\, but also examines the global and universal impact of the Dada movement right up to the present day. Look out for the legendary “Fountain” by Marcel Duchamp\, which is essentially the “Mona Lisa” of Dadaism. And in a whirl through time and space\, the Dada esprit comes alive through objects\, projections and poems\, involving all the human senses. \nBecause: “DADA EST TATOU. TOUT EST DADA.” \nCheck out additional Dada events

SUMMARY:photo16 Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Zürich is hosting photo16\, the annual photography exhibit. The event has established itself as Switzerland’s largest showcase of photography. \nThe organizers of photo16 have invited more photographers than ever: 150 professional and amateur artists from the areas of advertising\, art and press will be highlighting their best photographic work. \nWe have never missed a year because we love the setting of the formerly industrial Maag factory. The urban industrial halls create a perfect backdrop for photography. We are super excited that there is a platform for user generated content: The top 100 photographs tagged with #dasischzüri will be displayed. \nAs part of photo16\, the Swiss Photo Academy will be awarding the designation of “Swiss Photographer of the Year”. The nominees are Nico Krebs/Taiyo Onorato\, Pascal Mora\, Anne Morgenstern\, Flurina Rothenberger\, and Meinrad Schade. \nAnd finally\, the photoFORUM will host international top photographers such as Christopher Morris. \n(Photography Credit: photo-schweiz.ch)

SUMMARY:Jungkunst Art Exhibit (Winterthur)
DESCRIPTION:For their 10th anniversary\, the Jungkunst art event has commissioned no less than 25 young artists. From sculptors to street art\, this four-day event covers a wide range of artistic expression. \nI am particularly excited about the Container Museum\, an art gallery inside shipping containers. (Freitag brothers\, are you taking note?) I find it exceptional that this established art event features only original pieces. While it is a platform for young artists to be discovered\, it is just as much an opportunity for the public to purchase original art.\n  \nLinda Bernhard at Jungkunst\nAmong the more than two dozen artists is Linda Bernhard\, a life-long friend of mine. The Swiss collage artist is based in the UK\, so I have only been able to see her creations online – until now. Linda’s nostalgic creations take us back to times when Photoshop was a store selling photo equipment. Her collages are the product of pure handicraft\, thus standing out in today’s digital world. \n \nJungkunst is held at the former industrial halls of Sulzer in Winterthur\, and the organizers have more than a few highlights in store… Did I mention live music and slam poetry? \n(Photographs copyright by zVg Jungkunst – Michael Haug\, Winterthur and Linda Bernhard)

SUMMARY:The Art of the Brick (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:A former industrial factory in Zürich will be turned into a colorful gallery this fall – brick by brick. \nBut what do Mona Lisa\, Andy Warhol and a T-Rex have in common? American artist Nathan Sawaya has recreated all three\, plus 100 others\, using more than a million colorful LEGO bricks. But if you are expecting a giant playground\, try again. The Art of the Brick features incredibly complex LEGO masterpieces\, created by this former New York attorney. \nAmong them is “Yellow”\, a skillful rendition of a male torso made up of 11‘000 LEGO bricks. \nSawaya has managed to excite visitors of all ages across more than 30 cities around the world. If you have ever caught yourself staring at a pile of LEGO bricks in a toy store\, trying to resist the urge to build something\, this exhibit will be perfect for you… \nMore information and tickets \nThursday\, Dec. 24\, 2015\nClosed \nFriday\, Dec. 25\, 2015\n1 PM – 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \nSaturday\, Dec. 26\, 2015\n10 AM – 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \nThursday\, Dec. 31\, 2015\n10 AM – 4 PM (last admission 3 PM) \nFriday\, Jan. 1\, 2016\n1 PM – 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \nSaturday\, Jan. 2\, 2016\n10 AM – 7 PM (last admission 6 PM) \n \n(Photograph copyright by Gregory Williams/Flickr)

SUMMARY:Richard Deacon – On The Other Side (Winterthur)
DESCRIPTION:Kunstmuseum Winterthur is presenting a solo exhibition of the British sculptor Richard Deacon through November 15\, 2015. \nRichard Deacon’s sculptures are created from a variety of materials\, including wood\, metal\, and ceramics\, in organic and created shapes. His sculptures range from the monumental to the miniature\, and are visibly striking. The pieces included in the exhibit have been created over the last decade and show how Deacon has deviated from the usual laws of sculpture. \n \nBorn in Bangor\, Caernarvonshire\, Wales in 1949\, Richard Deacon attended the Somerset College of Art\, Taunton\, Saint Martin’s School of Art\, London\, and the Royal College of Art in London. He lives and works in London\, and is the recipient of the 1987 Turner Prize. \nMore information \n(Photographs copyright by Kunstmuseum Winterthur)

SUMMARY:Exhibit by Japanese Artist Taisuke Koyama (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Gallery in Zürich is displaying the first European solo exhibition of Japanese artist Taisuke Koyama. \nNEW LIGHT is a colorful exhibit taking advantage of the dynamic properties of digital light. OK\, this sounds very technical\, but Koyama’s work really does provide a spark of color during these grey days of fall! \nLight Field is an abstract visualization of light using transparent paper\, while Photons is a play with sun rays. SUMMARY:Swiss Style - International Graphic Design (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Simple graphic design seems to be the trend these days. \nSince we are surrounded by visual opulence\, very simple layouts seem downright spectacular to our eyes. It is due to pioneering work in the 1960’s that the international success of Swiss graphic design has been established. \nJoseph Müller-Brockmann\, Karl Gerstner and Armin Hofmann created a reduced design developed under the name “Swiss Style”\, making it a landmark movement which still influences graphic design to this day. \nFurthermore\, European graphic designers such as Wim Crouwel and Massimo Vignelli established minimalist aesthetic worldwide. \nThe latest exhibition at Museum für Gestaltung (Schaudepot) in Zürich highlights the successful distribution of the Swiss Style. The relevance and longevity of Swiss Style are proven through selected contemporary works\, including a critical intervention of the Amsterdam designer trio Experimental Jetset. \nGet ready for this exhibit by checking out our book review of 100 Years of Swiss Design. It is the perfect companion for this exhibit. \n  \nMore Information\n– The exhibition takes place from April 17 to July 26\, 2015.\n– Museum für Gestaltung Website\n– Top 5 Most Influential Swiss Designers on Newly Swissed

SUMMARY:Japanese Inspirations (Kunsthaus Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Japanese art is of fundamental importance to the development of European Modernism. \nAlmost all the great artists drew inspiration from its motifs and characteristic style\, including Monet\, Gauguin and Van Gogh. In fact\, Vincent Van Gogh did not only paint sunflowers – he was into Japanese motifs as well. \nFor the first time in over 25 years\, a comprehensive exhibition examines the phenomenon known as Japonisme. The exhibit Japanese Inspirations features more than 350 works of art from the period of 1860 to 1910. It is a fascinating look into the perceptions of Japan that prevailed in Europe at the time. \n  \nMore Information\n– Opening times: Tu/Fr/Sa/Su from 10 AM to 6 PM\, We/Th from 10 AM to 8 PM\n– Guided tours in English: Mar 21 and May 9 (1 PM)\n– Guided tour in Japanese: Feb 28 (1 PM)\n– Guided tour in French: Apr 11 (1 PM)\n– Kunsthaus Zürich “Japanese Inspirations” information \n(Feature image copyright by Van Gogh Museum\, Amsterdam)

DESCRIPTION:Zürich is once again hosting the photography exhibit photo15. This year marks the 10th anniversary\, which speaks to the popularity of Switzerland’s largest photography exhibit. \nThe organizers of photo15 have invited some 125 Swiss (and some international) photographers to highlight their best photographic work. We believe that the formerly industrial halls of Maag are a perfect setting for photography. Last year alone\, some 23‘000 visitors have mingled among the artwork during the weekend exhibit. \nThere will be special exhibits at the Flux Laboratory in the nearby Schiffbau: “PRIVATE! A SMALL COLLECTION” and “A BLAST FROM THE PAST – HOLLYWOODS SECRET GAY AFFAIR”. \nAdditionally\, the photoFORUM will host the world renowned war photographer James Nachtwey. He has been contributing to TIME Magazine for more than 30 years\, and he will be talking about his work at the world’s front lines. \n(Photography Credit: Caroline Micaela Hauger)

SUMMARY:Andrea Garbald Photography Exhibit (Chur)
DESCRIPTION:(Giovanni and Annetta Giacometti with their four children Alberto\, Diego\, Bruno and Ottilia (ltr)\, 1909\, original print\, 16 x 21 cm/25.5 x 33.8 cm (Privately held)\, © 2014 Fondazione Garbald\, Castasegna) \nThe Bergell valley is commonly known as the birthplace of famous Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. It may have been the valley’s special panorama which inspired one of his contemporaries\, Andrea Garbald (1877-1958)\, to start documenting it on film. \nTheir paths ultimately crossed when Garbald was commissioned to portray the Giacommeti family. It is this group photograph that has become his most iconic and well known output. Meanwhile\, much of the intricate\, day-to-day documentation of the cultural history of Bergell has been largely underappreciated. \n(Soglio\, 1905\, original print\, 9.7 x 12.8 cm\, © 2014 Fondazione Garbald\, Castasegna) \nFor the first time\, the lifetime achievement of Andrea Garbald will be shown to the public at the Bündner Kunstmuseum in Chur. Having spent almost his entire life in the Bergell\, Garbald has left a never before seen collection of photographs in print and in negative. The new exhibit allows you to dive into the culture\, nature and life of this valley and the photographer behind the lens. \nThe exhibition is linked to the 150 year anniversary of Villa Garbald. On this occasion\, the first monograph about the photographer and artist is being published.

SUMMARY:World Press Photo 2014 (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:The winners of the World Press Photo 14 contest have been announced! \nAmerican photographer John Stanmeyer won “World Press Photo of the Year 2013”. The awarded image shows African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city at night\, raising their phones in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia – a tenuous link to relatives abroad. \nDjibouti is a common stop-off point for migrants in transit from such countries as Somalia\, Ethiopia and Eritrea\, seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East. Stanmeyer shot the picture for National Geographic on February 26\, 2013. \nThe winning photograph along with the others selected will be presented by KEYSTONE at Sihlcity’s Folium in Zürich. \n(Photograph copyright by John Stanmeyer/VII Photo Agency for National Geographic)
