SUMMARY:Jean Dubuffet at Fondation Beyeler - Guided Tour in English (Basel)
DESCRIPTION:You may not have heard of Jean Dubuffet until now\, but he is one of the defining artists of the latter half of the 20th century. \nThe Fondation Beyeler is dedicating a large scale retrospective to this French painter and sculptor who had left his marks in works from Hockney to Haring. As part of this carefully curated exhibit\, you will get to see Dubuffet's rich and multi-layered body of work. \nThe more than 100 pieces create a unique visual universe which should not be missed. Jean Dubuffet had a particularly fascinating idea of landscape: He thought it could transform itself into a body\, a face or an object. As you will see\, the artist experimented with a variety of techniques and materials\, from sand to butterfly wings. \nTake part of this guided tour in English and add even more value to your museum visit. The Jean Dubuffet exhibit will be on through May 8\, 2016. \n(Photograph/images copyright ProLitteris Zurich/Fondation Beyeler)

SUMMARY:Dada Universal Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:"DADA WAS THERE BEFORE THERE WAS DADA." \nThe radical artistic and literary movement "Dada" was founded in Zürich exactly 100 years ago. Dada gained instant fame around the world\, but what exactly does the word "Dada" imply? \nIs it nonsense and absurdity? Not exactly\, because Dada was a response to the madness of World War I. The Swiss National Museum in Zürich is now holding an exhibit to commemorate this important anniversary: 100 years since the birth of Dadaism. \nThe exhibition not only features works of Dada art and literature\, but also examines the global and universal impact of the Dada movement right up to the present day. Look out for the legendary "Fountain" by Marcel Duchamp\, which is essentially the "Mona Lisa" of Dadaism. And in a whirl through time and space\, the Dada esprit comes alive through objects\, projections and poems\, involving all the human senses. \nBecause: "DADA EST TATOU. TOUT EST DADA." \nCheck out additional Dada events

SUMMARY:Swiss French Culinary Weeks at Storchen (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:The Storchen is a renowned hotel with an in-house restaurant\, nestled beside the Limmat river in Zürich. \nThis season\, two chefs have put on their chef's hats to come up with an exquisite six course meal served in the restaurant's own kitchen. The twist? One of the chefs is Swiss\, while the other is French. It is a collaboration of two culinary artists with decades of experience! \nFrom fois gras to lamb\, from lentil salad with Valais apricot liquor to tarte tatin aux pommes: The chefs have not spared any efforts and are even offering up grandma's dessert recipe... \n\n \nWe have met the Storchen chef\, Fredi Nussbaum\, several times before. He always surprises with dishes that have an exotic touch. His counterpart during the Swiss French culinary weeks is Cyrille Anizan\, a French chef who will be serving his favorite dishes to your kitchen table. \nIf you like gourmet food in a unique setting\, call in a reservation before they are booked out. Your table will be situated inside the Storchen kitchen within an arm's length of the two chefs. \nPhone: +41 44 227 27 27\nEmail: info@storchen.ch \n(Feature photograph copyright Storchen)

SUMMARY:Fondue Weeks at Quai 61 (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Finally\, cold winter has arrived in Zürich - with snowflakes and melted cheese! \nQuai 61\, our new hot spot\, has decorated its marine deck with Edelweiss prints and sheep furs\, luring its hungry patrons up the red carpeted stairs. \nWhile blocks of Gruyère and Fribourg Vacherin cheese are grinded and melted over the mahogany counter bar\, we start to nibble on the specially assorted dried meats from Hatecke\, a delicacy butchery from Scuol. The butcher is a long time friend of Quai 61 chef Gusti. Thanks to their friendship\, the Quai 61 autumn menu featured rare marmot meat from Graubünden. \nWe learn that most commercially available dried Bündnerfleisch is imported from far-away places like Argentina. It is only the seasoning and curing that are usually done in Switzerland. But Hatecke is one of the few producers who dry the best local meat in a cave\, placing lots of attention on the aesthetics of the product. \n  \nFor the appetizer\, the sommelier paired a 2012 Pinot Noir from the same region - it cannot get any more local than that.\n\n  \nThe Nüsslisalat (lamb's lettuce) with egg and croutons on a dressing with a hint of mustard and curry:\n\n  \nNot to sound overly cheesy\, but this was one of the most delicious fondues we have ever had. (It used champagne instead of white wine.)\n\n\n  \nAnd an assortment of desserts to round it off: Panna cotta with passion fruit\, fruit salad\, chocolate mousse and cinnamon apple fritters with vanilla sauce:\n \nDon't miss Fondue Weeks at Quai 61 through the end of January! Have a look at the menu and invite your cheese loving friends for a cozy Thursday\, Friday or Saturday night out...

SUMMARY:photo16 Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Zürich is hosting photo16\, the annual photography exhibit. The event has established itself as Switzerland’s largest showcase of photography. \nThe organizers of photo16 have invited more photographers than ever: 150 professional and amateur artists from the areas of advertising\, art and press will be highlighting their best photographic work. \nWe have never missed a year because we love the setting of the formerly industrial Maag factory. The urban industrial halls create a perfect backdrop for photography. We are super excited that there is a platform for user generated content: The top 100 photographs tagged with #dasischzüri will be displayed. \nAs part of photo16\, the Swiss Photo Academy will be awarding the designation of "Swiss Photographer of the Year". The nominees are Nico Krebs/Taiyo Onorato\, Pascal Mora\, Anne Morgenstern\, Flurina Rothenberger\, and Meinrad Schade. \nAnd finally\, the photoFORUM will host international top photographers such as Christopher Morris. \n(Photography Credit: photo-schweiz.ch)

SUMMARY:Russian Weeks at Quai 61 (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Quai 61 on the quiet banks of Lake Zürich is one of our favorite restaurants. \nWhenever we go there for a Sunday brunch or a romantic dinner\, it feels like we are entering a 1920's Charleston style era. For the Russian New Year\, the restaurant by the Enge yacht harbor has rolled out the first ever themed experience: Russian Weeks. \nIt comes to no surprise that Gustav Thöni\, the talented young chef at Quai 61\, has chosen Russia as the theme. Originally from the mountainous Swiss canton of Grisons\, Thöni has fallen for a Russian with a passion for food: His wife is a great cook who still treasures her family recipes. \nChef Thöni believes in traditional recipes with quality ingredients. He tells us that "Russian food is influenced many times over by Muslim dishes from the south\, Chinese dishes from the east and the five seas." \nTonight\, we are here to eat our way through the Russian Week menu. We can surely taste the kitchen collaboration of the Thöni family: The courses are traditionally Russian\, but the chef has often spiced them up in new ways. \nFor instance\, take the Soljanka sausage and beef stew which Thöni has enhanced with Swiss Landjäger sausage. Even his Russian regulars were sold on this reinvented fusion soup - and the Russian menu in general. Their feedback: It tastes like Russian food from grandmother's place. \nOn the other hand\, we find out that Mrs. Thöni is the genius behind the pickled herring and red onion. (She has used a family recipe.) Here are some mouthwatering impressions from our dinner at Quai 61: \n  \nKhychiny is a typical Russian flatbread which contains some potato. It is most delicious when eaten with sour cream and freshly cut coriander:\n\n  \nSoljanka is a sweet and sour beef stew with bell peppers\, white cabbage and coriander. In a world's first\, it was enhanced by some Swiss Landjäger sausage:\n\n  \nThe marinated herring with red onions and potatoes was delicious - thanks to the chef's wife's Soviet era family recipe for the pickling:\n\n  \nWe enjoy the Caucasian style lamb rack with a bottle of 2005 Brunello di Montalcino red wine. The sommelier was right in picking this smokey red\, because it goes perfectly with the smoked eggplant\, tomatoes and rosemary potatoes.\n\n  \nUkha is a typical Russian fish soup made of dorade\, pike\, perch and salmon.\n\n  \nThe Pelmeni are home-made ravioli filled with venison and creamy cabbage. The secret to keeping them moist? Oxtail oil.\n\n  \nAnd to finish off our Russian adventure\, what's more fitting than lemon sorbet with vodka?\n \nDon't miss Russian Weeks at Quai 61 this week! Rain or snow\, it will be a fun getaway with friends\, or a romantic occasion with your date. Have a look at the menu and keep an eye out for upcoming theme weeks at Quai 61 in Zürich...

SUMMARY:MUMMENSCHANZ (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, no words are needed to speak a language. And when it comes to MUMMENSCHANZ\, that language is love. \nAfter more than forty years of touring the world\, this one-of-a-kind theater performance is coming back to Switzerland. After having missed it in 2012\, I am so happy that this October\, the legendary show is going to take over the stage at MAAG Halle in Zürich! \nFrom what I gather\, there is a slinky tube\, a clay face and a giant hand. These adorable creatures manipulate shadow and light to find their way into the audience's hearts. No wonder everyone who has ever seen this witty show loved it! Reviewers and spectators the world over are praising the experience that is MUMMENSCHANZ with adjectives such as "magical" or "enchanting". \nI find it amazing that their low-key concept which has captivated audiences as early as 1972 is still popular today. Meanwhile\, the world has grown used to fancy special effects\, but this Swiss mime troupe has stayed true to their roots. The latest act is called 40 years - a medley of all the highlights from four decades. \nI am truly looking forward to a night of heartfelt laughter! You?

SUMMARY:Zurich Writers Workshop 2015
DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing? \nThe 6th Annual Zurich Writers Workshop has recently opened for registration. It will take place Oct 23 - 25 at the Volkshaus in Zürich. \nThe weekend includes a Sunday afternoon author reading and panel discussion\, which is open to the public (although prior registration is necessary)\, as well as two intense weekend workshops focusing on specific genres of writing. \n  \nHere are five reasons you should attend\, from the very biased opinion of Chantal\, one of the authors-in-residence:\n1. You’ll learn how to improve your fiction writing. Emylia Hall is our fiction author in residence. The author of three novels\, including one set in Lausanne\, she'll be teaching a workshop on the craft of fiction with a focus on sense of place. Students will also have the opportunity to have their worked critiqued.\n \n2. You’ll learn that it only takes 800 words to launch a writing career. I’m teaching a workshop called Miniature Memoir: Writing and Publishing Personal Essays. Writing a personal essay is one of the best ways to break into freelancing. During my workshop\, I’ll take you from essay idea to international writing career\, one miniature memoir at a time.\n \n3. You’ll be able to ask questions. The author reading and Q&A session on Sunday afternoon\, Oct 25\, is open to the public (with prior registration). I’ll be reading from my book\, Swiss Life: 30 Things I Wish I'd Known. Emylia Hall will be reading from her new novel\, The Sea Between Us. And then we’ll be answering everything you’ve ever wanted to know about writing\, not writing\, life in Switzerland\, and life after Switzerland.\n \n4. You’ll meet other writers. Form critique groups\, find a friend\, or just get inspired. The workshop welcomes 30 writers from Switzerland and abroad who are as passionate about writing and finding fellow writers to share their work with as you are.\n \n5. You’ll love October in Zurich. October is a stunning time to visit Zurich — if you're not already here\, that is. The leaves peak about the week of our workshop and there are no tourists but still plenty of sunshine.\n \nMore information

SUMMARY:Jungkunst Art Exhibit (Winterthur)
DESCRIPTION:For their 10th anniversary\, the Jungkunst art event has commissioned no less than 25 young artists. From sculptors to street art\, this four-day event covers a wide range of artistic expression. \nI am particularly excited about the Container Museum\, an art gallery inside shipping containers. (Freitag brothers\, are you taking note?) I find it exceptional that this established art event features only original pieces. While it is a platform for young artists to be discovered\, it is just as much an opportunity for the public to purchase original art.\n  \nLinda Bernhard at Jungkunst\nAmong the more than two dozen artists is Linda Bernhard\, a life-long friend of mine. The Swiss collage artist is based in the UK\, so I have only been able to see her creations online - until now. Linda's nostalgic creations take us back to times when Photoshop was a store selling photo equipment. Her collages are the product of pure handicraft\, thus standing out in today's digital world. \n \nJungkunst is held at the former industrial halls of Sulzer in Winterthur\, and the organizers have more than a few highlights in store... Did I mention live music and slam poetry? \n(Photographs copyright by zVg Jungkunst - Michael Haug\, Winterthur and Linda Bernhard)

A trademark of Zurich Salon debates is that they have a high level of audience participation. \nThis will not the first time that the Zurich Salon is hosting a debate. SUMMARY:11th Zurich Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Zurich Film Festival is coming back bigger and better than ever! \nDuring the 10th anniversary last year\, the ZFF has attracted some 79’000 movie-goers and dozens of local and international celebrities. With the all-access Festival Pass\, film buffs will have the chance to binge watch up to 130 flicks this September… At 149 francs\, that’s a steal! \nMy favorite events surrounding the Zurich Film Festival are the gala nights at the green carpet. Watching celebs walk down the iconic green carpet and pose for photographers allows even a Zürcher like me to taste some Hollywood air... \n\n  \nZurich Film Festival Opening Night\nJust to give you an example: To kick off opening night\, the organizers have attracted the star of "Slumdog Millionaire"\, Dev Patel! He will be appearing prior to the premiere in front of the Corso movie theater... \nSo\, grab your camera and/or smartphone and be there way ahead of everyone else to be in the front row. If you get lucky\, Dev Patel might stop for a selfie with you! \n  \nMore Information\n- ZFF Program (Ticket sales start on September 14\, 2015)\n- ZFF Festival Pass \nCheck out our coverage from previous ZFF editions: 2011\, 2012\, and a special meeting with Oliver Stone.

SUMMARY:Richard Deacon – On The Other Side (Winterthur)
DESCRIPTION:Kunstmuseum Winterthur is presenting a solo exhibition of the British sculptor Richard Deacon through November 15\, 2015. \nRichard Deacon’s sculptures are created from a variety of materials\, including wood\, metal\, and ceramics\, in organic and created shapes. His sculptures range from the monumental to the miniature\, and are visibly striking. The pieces included in the exhibit have been created over the last decade and show how Deacon has deviated from the usual laws of sculpture. \n \nBorn in Bangor\, Caernarvonshire\, Wales in 1949\, Richard Deacon attended the Somerset College of Art\, Taunton\, Saint Martin’s School of Art\, London\, and the Royal College of Art in London. He lives and works in London\, and is the recipient of the 1987 Turner Prize. \nMore information \n(Photographs copyright by Kunstmuseum Winterthur)

SUMMARY:Street Food Festival (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:What better way to spend a weekend than with friends and food? \nThe Street Food Festival is coming back just in time for those of us still nostalgic about the summer of the century. I will be there when the fair opens\, seeking out comfort food from the more than 80 street vendors. \n  \nThe Street Food Festival at Mythenquai\nFoodies\, listen up: Eat your way through the salty and savory main dishes\, then indulge in a delicious dessert... The portion sizes are kept small enough so that you get to try a variety of dishes. \nThe vendors are housed in creative food trucks or market booths\, serving their burgers\, sausages or dumplings in biodegradable tableware. \n \nAfter Puls 5 and the Dolder ice-rink\, this weekend’s edition of the Street Food Festival is taking place along the lake between Seebad Enge and Quai 61. The Mythenquai is a perfect location\, we think. \nOpening times: Th 5 PM – 12 AM\, Fr 5 PM – 2 AM\, Sa 11 AM – 2 AM\, Su 11 AM - 8 PM \n  \nMore information\n- Facebook event\n- Official website\n- How to get there by public transportation (no parking available)\n- Impressions from the Street Food Festival in Spring 2015

SUMMARY:Exhibit by Japanese Artist Taisuke Koyama (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Gallery in Zürich is displaying the first European solo exhibition of Japanese artist Taisuke Koyama. \nNEW LIGHT is a colorful exhibit taking advantage of the dynamic properties of digital light. OK\, this sounds very technical\, but Koyama's work really does provide a spark of color during these grey days of fall! \nLight Field is an abstract visualization of light using transparent paper\, while Photons is a play with sun rays. Rainbows and unicorns - we like! \n  \nMore Information\n- Sunday Gallery Facebook Page\n- Taisuke Koyama \n(Feature picture copyright by Taisuke Koyama)

SUMMARY:93rd Congress of the Swiss Abroad (Geneva)
DESCRIPTION:The city of Geneva is not only home to the United Nations\, but also the 93rd Congress of the Swiss Abroad. Swiss representatives from all over the world will be coming together for this annual event. \n  \nThis year's topic: Citizen Education\nWith Switzerland's direct democracy being a model in the world\, this year's congress is going to elaborate on citizen education. Voter participation is the essence of a democratic system\, so how can political participation be maintained (or increased)? When it comes to the Swiss Abroad\, some 155'000 are registered to vote - a number which mirrors the participation in Switzerland. \nWhat is the role of education in ensuring a democratic society? And what roles should public\, private and semi-private education play when it comes to education? These and many other questions will be the topic of panel discussions and workshops. Throughout the weekend\, various high level speakers will provide answers and insights into their visions for Switzerland. They include Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard\, the director of Amnesty International Switzerland\, Manon Schick\, or Arthur Honegger\, the acting US correpondant for Swiss television. \nAbove all\, the Congress of the Swiss Abroad is a great place for networking and enjoying what the host city Geneva has to offer...\n  \nHere's Christian and I with Swiss Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf in 2013:\n \n  \nMore Information\nReserve a congress ticket\n- Buy a Swiss Travel Pass at 75% off the regular rate. SUMMARY:La Tavolata Music & Food Festival (St. Moritz)
DESCRIPTION:On the last weekend in July\, a colorful crowd of visitors and locals will take a seat at a 400 meter long wooden table in the pedestrian area of St. Moritz. \nLa Tavolata emerged from the idea of uniting the entire village of St. Moritz at one big table. Word spread like wildfire and in the first year\, more than 5000 visitors showed up - instead of the projected 2000! Last year\, the event reached another milestone by entertaining some 8000 visitors during one weekend. \n \nNow in its fifth year\, this typical Engadine food and music festival has not lost its charm. The weekend takes off on Saturday at noon with a Tavolata Street BBQ. Imagine a giant BBQ grill in the middle of town... \nThe classic Tavolata experience takes place on Sunday. It features dishes prepared by award-winning chefs from local St. Moritz hotels and restaurants\, including Badrutt's Palace and Kulm Hotel St. Moritz. Music plays an equally important role at the festival\, so expect bands and street musicians from all over Europe! \nIn the true spirit of a non-profit\, La Tavolata has remained independent. The organizers depend on generous contributions from donors and friends. And what we treasure most about this festival: Despite being held in ritzy St. Moritz\, it remains open to everyone thanks to democratic prices and without the need for reservations... \n \n(Photography copyright by Vera Bohm)
