SUMMARY:Ballet Revolucion (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:As part of their European tour\, the explosive dance show Ballet Revolución is returning to Switzerland once again! \nCuba is often associated with passionate music and dance. And the ensemble that is Ballet Revolución has figured out just the perfect mix which has audiences hooked the world over. Mixing classical ballet and contemporary street dance\, the dancers will have you tap your feet from the moment they appear on stage... \nAccording to those who have watched the show in the past\, the dancing is "explosive"\, "mesmerizing" and often "sensual". Adding depth to this brilliant show is the fact that Ballet Revolución was actually choreographed right at the National Theater right in Havanna\, Cuba! \nIf this were not enough\, the dancers will be fired on by a live band consisting of eight musicians. And you are bound to recognize many of the songs from the likes of Justin Timberlake\, Justin Bieber\, Adele or Enrique Iglesias! \nHaving seen shows at Halle 622 before\, we can only imagine how intense and vibrant the mambo beats of Ballet Revolucion are going to feel... In short: Don't plan on taking a breath for at least two hours! \nMore information or tickets from ticketcorner.ch \n

SUMMARY:The LES MISÉRABLES Musical is coming to Zürich in 2020
DESCRIPTION:Exciting times are coming up for Switzerland. For the first time in its history\, Swiss audiences will be enjoying the original English version of LES MISÉRABLES in 2020. \nThe brilliant new staging is inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo and his classic novel. Paired with its beloved melodies\, this musical has everything it takes to make our start into the new year a happy one. \nWhat you need to know about the LES MISÉRABLES Musical\nLES MISÉRABLES is the world’s longest running and most loved musical. It has garnered 100 prestigious international awards to its name. Inspired by Victor Hugo's novel\, this modern classic musical is as groundbreaking today as it was during its first premier in London in 1985. \nIt is an epic tale of redemption and passion. It is packed with an emotional wallop that continues to thrill worldwide audiences of all ages. Seen and enjoyed by over 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages\, LES MISÉRABLES is truly one of the world's best musicals. \nIn nineteenth century France\, Jean Valjean is an ex-convict who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a bread loaf. Upon his release\, he receives mistrust and mistreatment everywhere he goes. This is until Bishop Myriel helps him to start a new life. However\, police inspector Javert hunts Valjean\, who has been living under the name Monsieur Madeleine... \nFinally\, a tragic climax. During the 1832 Paris student uprising\, Valjean spares his life to save that of the student revolutionary. The latter had captured the heart of the main character’s adopted daughter Cosette. Disgusted and horrified\, Javert commits suicide and Valjean attains the peace that he has sought for so long. \n \nAbout the original English version on tour\nWith countless hours of rehearsals between actors\, musicians and technicians\, each performance of the musical will transport you back to the France of the 19th century. The stunning Killian Donnelly is playing the lead role of Jean Valjean. Nic Greenshields will play Javert\, and gorgeous Katie Hall will be in the role of Fantine. \nYou will see Martin Ball\, Harry Apps\, Will Richardson\, Nicholas Corre\, Brian James Leys\, Ruben Van Keer\, Lee Ormsby\, and many others on stage. Other female ensembles will include Jamie Birkett\, Helen Aylott\, Mary-Jean Caldwell\, Bronwen Hanson and Megan Gardiner. The entire touring production is directed by James Powell and multi award-winner Laurence Connor. \nThe orchestra will perform operatic passages while reflecting feelings through their voices overflowing with sorrow\, joy\, and\, cries\, and giggles. The cast will perform in a way to keep every scene taut\, tense and perfectly timed. \nA musical that's all but miserable\nBasically\, what we are trying to say is that LES MISÉRABLES is sure to fill your soul with romance and throb. Cameron Mackintosh\, composer Claude-Michel Schönberg\, and musical script writer\, Alain Boublil\, have already successfully collaborated on several occasions. Among other productions\, LES MISÉRABLES and Miss Saigon went down in musical history. \nThe show is said to take approximately 2 hours 30 minutes\, including an interval. This is the original English version.. \nThe musical will take place from January 21 to February 23\, 2020. While this is still a while away\, why not secure tickets already? \nTheater 11\nThurgauerstrasse 7\n8050 Zürich\nPhone: 044 265 56 01 \n \n(Photographs copyright musical.ch)

SUMMARY:Let's play! An exhibit about the history of video games
DESCRIPTION:(Key visual copyright Swiss National Museum/Roli Hofer) \nPacman\, Tetris and Super Mario Bros. are names that bring up memories. Yet just a couple of decades ago\, video games were looked at as a gimmick. \nThis spring\, the Swiss National Museum in Zürich is dedicating a temporary exhibit to the history of video games. \nAs one of the world's top leisure activities\, video games have surely established themselves in popular culture. (Globally\, some 2.5 billion people play video games!) The evolution from Commodore 64 to today's virtual reality experiences in cyberspace is remarkable. \nThis exhibit looks at the 50-years old history of electronic games\, giving visitors lots of opportunities to get hands on. When is the last time you played Pacman? Personally\, I cannot wait to see this exhibit and get my game on... Who knows? I might even start to spend my lunch hours there! \nTest your skills in this browser based game especially developed for the exhibit. \nOpening hours: Tue - Sun 10 AM to 5 PM\, Thu 10 AM to 7 PM\, closed on Mon \nMore information \n \n(All photographs copyright Swiss National Museum)

SUMMARY:photoSCHWEIZ is coming back to Zürich in 2020
DESCRIPTION:Once the holiday dust has settled and the new year has kicked off\, we are always glad to find inspiration at photoSCHWEIZ. \nYou may remember the previous editions of Switzerland's largest photography exhibit\, such as photo19. In 2020\, the organizers have rebranded the exhibit to simply photoSCHWEIZ. \nMore than 300 photographers will be displaying their best works\, whereby 200 photographs will be part of the regular exhibit. The remaining pieces will be spread among 18 special exhibitions covering everything from documentary to nature photography. \nOne such exhibit is entitled "Doomed Paradise"\, a long term documentation of the rain forests of Borneo. Photographer Tomas Wüthrich has traveled there multiple times in order to visit with local residents who are fighting deforestation. I am particularly interested in this show because the recent feature film\, Paradise War\, about Bruno Manser\, has brought the Penan people back into popular consciousness. \nphotoSCHWEIZ workshops\nThose who want to further their photography skills or are considering a career as a photographer should look into the 120 workshops. Topics range from travel photography to aerial photography (held in English). \nphotoSCHWEIZ is open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM and tickets are available online.\n \n(Photograph copyright Ruth Spiller/photoSCHWEIZ)

SUMMARY:Pong! The Vintage Computer Festival is coming back to Zürich
DESCRIPTION:Vintage computer festivals are held across the world. And once again this November\, there's one coming back to Zürich! \nRelive the home computer years\, but also experience computers from from the 1950's to the 1970's. Remember the blinked rows of lights on massive front panels\, hidden in research labs\, universities and big companies? There is no admission for kids\, and they will be well catered for with a large Vintage Gaming section. \nExhibitors (both private collectors and museums) have made great efforts to engage families with children\, and not just computer enthusiasts\, with a varied\, fun but also educational experience. As it turns out\, a big computer from 1970 is not so hard to understand for people today. \nThe event is hosted in the Rote Fabrik at Seestrasse 395. \nFollow them on Twitter or check out the photo gallery from 2016.

SUMMARY:Traditional Onion Market - Zibelemärit (Bern)
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the chilly month of November\, Bern wakes up in the dark hours for the annual Onion Market. This tradition has been praising the humble little vegetable for nearly 200 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe one time of the year Bern goes bunkers over onions\n\n\n\nHere's what the atmosphere at the Onion Market is like: You see tons of perfected onion tresses all around you\, the smell of mulled wine\, garlic bread\, and onion pies is in the air\, there is confetti covering the streets (and people) and now and then you’re softly being hit by a squeaky hammer. \n\n\n\nThe masses of onions in this market are unbelievable. In 2015\, farmers from near and far sold nearly 60 tons of onions! \n\n\n\nThe best way to embrace this popular and very down-to-earth tradition is to put on your peppermint sugar bead necklace\, see and eat around\, and stroll among the busy streets of Bern until dawn. Countless stands not only offer onions but different local delicacies and crafts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy advice: To avoid the crowds\, visit the market before 6 AM.\n\n\n\nFor the truly brave\, the traditional Zibeleschwümme (Onion Swim) takes place on the Sunday before the market. At 1 PM at the Schönausteg\, watch the daredevil swimmers immerse in the bitterly cold Aare river.

SUMMARY:Circus Conelli is a Christmas tradition in Zürich
DESCRIPTION:Update from Nov 25\, 2019: We can no longer endorse this circus.\n\n\n\nAt tonight's VIP premiere\, the host urged us to spread the word if we like the show\, but not to share anything if we did not like it. The first half of the show was nothing to write home about. It was simply average. \n\n\n\nThen\, the mayor of Zurich\, Mrs. Corine Mauch\, introduced the second half. We wonder whether she knew about the racist clown number that would follow... Picture a cowboy patronizing a dumb Native American. The cowboy goes on to whip the Native American. \n\n\n\nThe so-called "VIP audience"\, including the former head of SVP\, Christoph Blocher\, was roaring about the dumb clowns and their embarrassing jokes in Swiss-English. We felt appalled by the insensitivity of this circus and we would urge Circus Conelli to remove this act. \n\n\n\nWe live in the 21st century and we feel deeply ashamed that an insensitive\, racist clown act can be performed right in the heart of Zürich.

SUMMARY:Visit Santa Claus at Rochers de Naye! (Montreux Noël)
DESCRIPTION:High above Lake Geneva is the peak of Rochers de Naye\, a destination reachable by cogwheel train from Montreux. \nThis Winter Wonderland is not only a favorite among those looking for a refreshing getaway\, but also among a bearded man and his helpers: Santa Claus! That's right: in his hut (which is conveniently accessible from the railway station)\, the old man welcomes children of all ages during the holidays. \nA photograph with Santa Claus at Rochers de Naye\nBeyond the magic tunnel with its flashing lights\, there is a small stage for the meet-and-greet and the picture taking. As we found out on our recent trip\, Santa Claus speaks many different languages - from Russian to Japanese\, English and French. There is an official photographer\, but anyone is allowed to take their own pictures at no charge. \n \nDuring Montreux Noël\, Santa Claus can be visited Wednesdays through Sundays\, as well as on Monday\, Dec 23\, and Tuesday\, Dec 24\, 2019.\n \nBut Rochers de Naye offers plenty of activities and things to see during any day of the festive season. The kids can gather stamps on a scavenger hunt and they can even peek into Santa's bedroom. Meanwhile\, the scenic panorama at 2042 meters above sea invites for memorable selfies. \nRestaurant Le Coucou in Caux\nOn our way back to Montreux Noël\, we hopped off the cogwheel train in Caux above Mntreux. Just footsteps from the station is Restaurant Le Coucou\, a charming chalet serving local favorites. Try the cheese platter for some unique local fromage: \n\n  \nMore information about Santa Claus at Rochers de Naye\nA part of Montreux Noël\, Santa's House at Rochers de Naye offers a perfect excursion for families. Check the website of MOB GoldenPass for various special offers combining the return trip and visit of Santa's House. Reservations are required as seats are limited. \nThe train to Rochers de Naye leaves from Montreux hourly starting from 9:17 AM to 3:17 PM. \nMore information about Montreux Noël\, and here is a post about our previous visit.

SUMMARY:THE KING AND I Musical is coming to Zürich
DESCRIPTION:Straight from the golden age of musicals\, meet THE KING AND I! \nAfter a record breaking season at The London Palladium\, the musical is now embarking on a world tour. This will be the first time for the current production of THE KING AND I to stop in Switzerland. \nWhat you need to know about the musical THE KING AND I\nThe story takes place in Bangkok around 1860. Anna\, a British teacher\, arrives in Bangkok during these imperialistic times. She will be visiting the court of the King of Siam in order to teach his highness and the 67 children in modernist ways. But with her brave and strong-willed nature\, she turns the royal court upside down. Without giving anything away\, there will be tragedy and romance... \nThe musical is based on the novel Anna and the King of Siam. It first appeared on Broadway in 1951. One year later\, it was a hit at the box office\, winning a Tony Award for "Best Musical". \nBut its revival has been critically acclaimed as well. In 1996 and 2015\, THE KING AND I has won Tony Awards for "Best Revival". And finally\, you might remember the 1999 movie adaptation starring Jodie Foster. \nThis is the fifth musical by the Rodgers and Hammerstein team. The two have drummed up a large orchestra and 50 outstanding artists. I am very much looking forward to hearing the live performances of songs such as Shall We Dance\, Getting To Know You\, or Whistle A Happy Tune. \nAbout the original UK cast\nThe cast for this musical includes Kok-Hwa Liein in the role of Kralahome\, and Aaron Teoh as Prince Chulalongkorn. William M Lee will play Phra Alak\, and Edward Baker Duly will take on dual roles of Orton and Ramsay. \nAmong the male ensemble are Steven Hardcastle\, Prem Rai\, Joaquin Pedro Valdes\, Jesse Milligan\, Eu Jin Hwang\, and Irvine Ray Abesamis. The female ensemble includes Misa Koide\, Ela Lisondra\, Ena Yamaguchi\, Miiya Alexandra\, Yuki Abe\, and Aiko Kato. \nThis revival of THE KING AND I musical has designs by Michael Yeargan as well as light designs by Donald Holder. Scott Lehrerm provides the sound design\, and costumes were designed by Catherine Zuber. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness this spectacular musical. Unless you are planning to travel abroad\, it will never be more convenient to see it than this winter in Zürich... \nHere is what reviewers in London have said about THE KING AND I\nThe producer of the musical\, Howard Panter\, has declared that “the response from London audiences to this multi-award winning production was unexpected." In addition\, WhatsOnStage also gave the show a four-star review saying that "It’s very hard to not to fall for the King and I\, which features some of the loveliest songs in musical theatre sung by an absolutely crack cast. The songs included in the musical were Getting to Know You\, Whistle A Happy Tune\, and Shall We Dance?" \nThe musical takes approximately 3 hours including an interval. This is the original UK version in English. It is recommended for children aged 8 years or older. \nGet your tickets at Ticketcorner \nTheater 11\nThurgauerstrasse 7\n8050 Zürich \n \n(Key visual copyright musical.ch)

SUMMARY:The third annual Le Salon du Design is coming back to Geneva
DESCRIPTION:Geneva's first 20th century design fair\, Le Salon du Design\, is coming back for a third edition. \nThis year\, the participating shops and galleries will be highlighting 100 years of design history. We expect the Le Salon du Design to be quite an experience as it showcases on postmodern furniture\, Bauhaus styles\, Scandinavian design and vintage design from Switzerland\, Italy and France. Visitors will have the chance to step through time and space in this exhibit that places quality over quantity. \nOne of the highlights will surely be the fiberglass shells made famous by Charles and Ray Eames. But we are also excited about the exhibition featuring (and selling) the most iconic productions of Swiss design. \nThe organic architecture of the Pavillon Sicli\, designed in the 1960s by Heinz Isler\, offers the ideal setting for authentic pieces from the 1920s to 1985. Swiss and international dealers are holding their most beautiful finds for the visitors of Le Salon du Design in Geneva as a preview of the major European events that will be held later on. \nTickets are 5 francs for those above 12 years of age. The exhibit is open as follows: Sat from 10 AM to 8 PM\, Sun from 10 AM to 6 PM. \n(Both photographs copyright Corine Stübi/Le Salon du Design)

SUMMARY:66th EXPOVINA Wine Fair (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:It is the time of year when a dozen boats are docked at Zürich's Bürkliplatz. The occasion is the annual EXPOVINA wine fair which features more than 4000 distinct vintages. \nThe organizers of the world's largest wine fair open to the public (!) could not have picked a better setting\, because Zürich's lakeside is most magical during late fall. For the next two weeks\, the charming Belle Époque boats will be attached together and lit up like a circus tent. \nOn board\, no less than 120 different Swiss wine makers are looking forward to present their best vintages to the public. Among the 4000 wines on offer\, 1500 are from Switzerland while the rest are from all significant wine regions of the world: Italy\, Spain and Portugal\, but also Argentine\, Chile\, Australia\, New Zealand and South Africa. All major regions of California\, USA\, will also be represented. Some lesser known regions such as Croatia\, Peru or Uruguay are also represented. \nHow the EXPOVINA "Wyschiff" works\nThe idea is to purchase an all-inclusive pass at the entrance of the fair. (You must be at least 18 years of age.) The admission price of 25 francs includes unlimited tastings on the EXPOVINA boats. Once you enter the fair\, you could take a look at the catalog and come up with a mini strategy: Which region are you most interested in? Alternatively\, simply go with the flow and follow your nose from one boat to the next. \nSince EXPOVINA has been around for longer than most people can remember\, the locals have come up with their own name for this staple event: Wyschiff. So if you are thinking of organizing a night out with a couple of friends\, dropping this code word will do the trick... \nMeet Provins\, the largest producer of Swiss wines\nWhen it comes to Swiss wines\, Provins is the single most prominent producer. They are an especially strong player in the Valais where 20 percent of wines are sold under the Provins label. To put this into perspective\, Provins is responsible for vineyards equivalent to the area of 1120 soccer fields. \n \nAt the Provins booth 213\, you have the opportunity to taste award winning wines such as the 2012 Clos Corbassières or the winner of this year's EXPOVINA competition for the best Valais wine. Here is a list of vintages available for sampling. \n  \nWhat are you waiting for? Join us on board EXPOVINA and visit Provins on the Helvetia boat at booth 213!\nMon to Sat\, 1 to 9 PM (last admission at 8:30 PM)\nSun 11 AM to 7 PM (last admission at 6:30 PM) \n(Photographs copyright EXPOVINA AG)

SUMMARY:Our festival preview for JAZZNOJAZZ 2019 in Zürich
DESCRIPTION:In comparison to the other Swiss Jazz festivals\, Zurich's JAZZNOJAZZ feels like the naughty sibling. \nWillisau may be intimate\, Ascona revels in open-air romance and traditional sounds. And\, of course\, Montreux is the big brother. Meanwhile\, JAZZNOJAZZ takes over the urban center of Zurich and invites acts who play on the very fringes of the Jazz genre. In fact\, you will rarely find a pure Jazz act playing over the autumn week in which JAZZNOJAZZ lands. \nHighlights of JAZZNOJAZZ 2019\nThis year the festival comes of age\, celebrating its 21th anniversary with as eclectic line-up as ever. Buy one of the coveted day passes and you are just as likely to be watching a legendary super group as discovering a new favorite. \nWednesday\, Oct 30\, 2019\nThe opening Wednesday sees Bugge Wesseltoft return to Zurich with his new Scandanavian trio\, Rymden. Bringing dramatic build-ups and looping melodies that distort and develop\, Rymden's debut album is both tender and dramatic. \n \nExpect the same from their live show\, which is presented alongside rising UK star Ashley Henry. In contrast\, Wednesday also sees performances from Charles Lloyd\, who excels in easy listening Jazz\, and John McLaughlin\, a master of intricate guitar. \nThursday\, Oct 31\, 2019\nThe second night sees a Brazilian band with a mythical status: Amymuth will bring Latin flair with their unique fusion of Jazz\, samba and electronica. In fact\, it will be a night of performances from exotic locations\, with Cuba (Chucho Valdés and Juan de Marcos’ Afro-Cuban All Stars)\, Brazil (Azymuth) and\, errr\, Leeds (the Haggis Horns) all represented. \nBringing the buzz will be current star of the rambunctious London Jazz scene\, Kamaal Williams. \nFriday\, Nov 1\, 2019\nOn Friday\, things get acid-Jazz tinged as The Brand New Heavies and Morcheeba hit the stage. There is also treat in store with legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. \nBut probably most exciting is a first visit to Zurich for the UK's hottest act\, The Comet is Coming. With an album exuding energy and defying convention at every turn\, this show will be a highlight of the weekend for many. \nSaturday\, Nov 2\, 2019\nSaturday starts early with Erika Stucky & FM Unit playing a family concert at 4 PM. As the evening arrives\, things will get a disco vibe with 80s stalwarts Level 42\, as well as Al McKay’s Earth Wind and Fire Experience. \nFinally\, expect a party-like finale with a third and final "Late Night Sessions" performance from Haggis Horns. Or choose live favorites Lucky Chops\, whose horn section covers are the perfect way to end the week. Get ready to hoist your hands in the air for their rousing version of Adele's "Hello"! \nTickets are available for individual shows or as day-passes. Of course\, you can also go the whole-hog with a week-long pass which will leave you needing a lie-down come Sunday. \nMore information and tickets

SUMMARY:Break the Tango Dance Show (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:(Photograph copyright René Tanner) \nOnce again this fall\, tango meets street dance in Zürich. \nBreak the Tango is a whirlwind of a show which is sure to heat up the MAAG Halle! The choreographer\, German Cornejo\, has recruited a dozen of the most talented tango dancers from Argentina (along with a tango band and a singer who will perform live on the stage). Bring in the best break dancers from around the globe and you have yourself a dance show for all tastes. \nOr as the organizers call it\, "an epic mix of tango\, break dance and live music." \nAre you ready to "break the tango"?\n(Photograph copyright René Tanner) \nWhen tradition meets modern times\, all the rules are broken. While the tango dancers elegantly glide across the dance floor\, the athletic break dancers create their own spectacle to songs from Adele to Otros Aires. The organizers state that "at first\, it seems like an impossible combination which blends together as the show progresses." \nWhen Break the Tango kicked off their tour in Zürich in 2016\, it sold out all the shows. After touring Europe in 2017\, the show was even performed in Bangkok in 2018. And now\, we are in for a treat yet again as the passionate dancers return to Switzerland. The young tango choreographer\, German Cornejo\, is collaborating with Switzerland born Björn Meier\, an internationally known break dancer who was in charge of said choreography in Break the Tango. \nReserve your tickets and get 20% off using the code NEWLY20\n

SUMMARY:Check out the Grape Festival in Mendrisio (Sagra del Borgo)
DESCRIPTION:The town of Mendrisio is known for its historical monuments\, churches\, charming alleyways and courtyards. \nLocated at the southern tip of Ticino\, Mendrisio has an illustrious past which can still be felt today. What better time to get acquainted with this typical Ticino town than during Sagra del Borgo? There has always been a grape festival\, but the town has revamped the concept as of 2017\, paying tribute to the before-mentioned courtyards. \nCourtyard action - Mendrisio style\nAs you will see\, traditional houses in Mendrisio have terracotta rooftops and magnificent inner courtyards. During the time of the festival\, a line-up of events will be happening in eight of those courtyards. From Jazz and Big Band concerts to children's workshops\, the aim is to relive the customs and traditions of the Mendrisio district. On the town's piazzas\, there will be family activities\, magic shows and more. \nFinally\, we are particularly keen to trying the polenta dishes that will be served hot and fresh throughout Sagra del Borgo. Depending on the courtyard\, you will find polenta with mountain cheese\, local salami\, beef or even game meat like deer! Did I mention the excellent local wines? \nAdmission is just 8 francs per person\, but it is free on Friday and Saturday before 6:30 PM\, as well as all day on Sunday. \n(Photographs copyright Sagra del Borgo)

SUMMARY:Zurich Film Festival 2019 - Everything you need to know
DESCRIPTION:Even fifteen years in\, every new edition of the Zurich Film Festival has its own distinct vibe. \nBy focusing on one country each year\, the ZFF gives a stage to new generations of filmmakers. We really like the "New World View" format because the line-up of screenings\, often in the presence of the filmmakers\, quite literally exposes us to a new world. After Argentina\, Brazil and Mexico in previous years\, the organizers will now shine a light on Colombian cinema. \nColombian cinema at the Zurich Film Festival\nGeorg Bütler\, senior programmer at the Zurich Film Festival\, explains that Colombian cinema is so appealing because of its urgency. The tone of these young Colombian filmmakers is uncompromising. And the stories out of Columbia's metropolises are contemporary and very much locally rooted. \nHe goes on: "Protagonists of the films are often young people who live in the metropolises of Medellín and Bogotá. They are still looking for their place in a confusing world." There will be a dozen feature films by Colombian directors\, including documentaries. \nEuropean premieres\nIt would not be the Zurich Film Festival without a slew of European premieres and special screenings. Despite a tremendous line-up which has grown to more than 170 films from 58 countries\, the ZFF has remained compact and easy to navigate. \nThe participating theaters are within city limits\, meaning that they can be reached by foot or by tram. Almost every night\, the green carpet in front of the Corso cinema turns into a Hollywood Walk of Fame. In previous years\, we have spotted icons such as Benicio del Toro\, Judi Dench\, Diane Keaton or Johnny Depp from close up. This year's ZFF Masters sessions will be headed by Hollywood stars Javier Bardem\, Donald Sutherland\, Roland Emmerich and Oliver Stone. \nHere's the actor Christoph Waltz who visited the ZFF in 2015: \n\n  \nOur advice\nThose who simply want to experience the magic of the movies should stop by the festival center at Sechseläutenplatz. Plastered with movie posters\, the buzz there will allow you to have your own 15 minutes of fame as you sip on a drink at the bar or chew on popcorn while feeling the buzz that only the film industry can create. \nAnd the movie buffs should take our advice and get the Multi-Pass. It's basically a golden ticket for unlimited movie screenings! And for sold out screenings\, returned tickets go on sale 15 minutes before the respective film begins. \nThe line-up will be released on Thursday\, Sept 12. Tickets go on sale on Monday\, Sept 16\, 2019. \nSo\, are you ready for 11 days of film? Like every September\, we are hungry to see what the Zurich Film Festival has in store...\n \nOur coverage from previous ZFF editions: 2011\, 2012\, Meeting Oliver Stone. \nNot that you would need them\, but here are 11 reasons to visit the Zurich Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Dublin Nights is one captivating dance show (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:Why has nobody thought of this before? This is ingenious! Think about it: Irish singer/songwriters have produced many catchy tunes. And for the first time\, real Irish dancers from Dublin will perform their own interpretation of these hits. \nMeet Dublin Nights\, a premiere for Switzerland!\nThis brand new dance show will surely bring some good vibes to Zürich. For a memorable soundscape at MAAG Halle\, a live band will perform hits by U2\, Ed Sheeran\, Ron Keating\, Van Morrison and even The Cranberries. \nAnd as for the dancers\, they are a company of up-and-coming talents - straight from Dublin\, Ireland! They have impressing resumés already\, with performances in mega shows such as Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. \n \nIn Dublin Nights\, they will showcase just how versatile Irish dance really is. I am expecting a contemporary dance show that will make my feet tap\, rather than a folklore Irish dance performance. \nAs the organizers put it: "Dublin Nights breathes new life into Irish dance. An energetic dance show straight from the Emerald Isle!" \nMore information and tickets \n \n \n(All photographs copyright MAAG MUSIC & ARTS AG)

SUMMARY:Bergkönig - Swiss Vintage Cycling Festival (Gstaad)
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the most beautiful steel bikes are coming back to the Swiss Alps. \nSwiss alpine roads have always been a legendary challenge for fast cyclists from all over the world. In fact\, most Tour de Suisse editions ended up being decided on alpine passes. And Switzerland has brought to the world some of the greatest racers of all time. \nIntroducing: Bergkönig\, the Swiss Vintage Bicycling Festival.\nNow is the time to celebrate these roads and the Swiss cycling tradition. And what place might be suited better as the home for this new Vintage Cycling Festival than Gstaad? This part of Switzerland is surrounded by some of the most beautiful passes and mountain roads offering tough challenges and spectacular views. Also\, Gstaad went cycle crazy when Swiss hero\, Hugo Koblet\, crossed the finish line here in 1950. Ascending all the way from Lausanne\, Koblet finished first in this leg of the Tour de Suisse in 1950. (He later won the entire tour!) \nStyle is a major concern of the organizers.\nThey want you to ride in vintage clothing or bring a classic car! Your creativity will be rewarded as there will be several special trophies... \n\n  \nThe event is open for all bicycles up to 1986\, and the racers' attire has to be vintage.\nFind out more \n(All photographs copyright Bergkönig)

SUMMARY:PerBacco! is a grape harvest festival in Bellinzona
DESCRIPTION:This rather young grape harvest festival in Bellinzona has quickly established itself. \nNo wonder\, because the four-day PerBacco! festival offers just the right balance of entertainment and cultural exploration. Among the vast selection\, we will be looking out for the local Bianco di Merlot by brothers Luca and Carlo Frasa. \n \nThe PerBacco! Market\nBellinzona has a regular Saturday market which we highly recommend. But on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday during the festival\, this outdoor market will be showcasing additional producers. Think booths selling everything from locally produced salami or jams to clothing\, handmade jewelry or greeting cards. \n- Friday from 5 PM until midnight\n- Saturday from 4 PM until midnight\n- Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM \n \nAbout the 2019 Photo Contest\nWhen you visit PerBacco!\, bring along your camera and capture the essence of Ticino's wine culture. SUMMARY:Why Blues to Bop is Lugano’s musical event of 2019
DESCRIPTION:Every September\, Lugano's typically quiet piazzas echo for three nights with the joyfully raucous sounds of blues\, gospel\, and honky-tonk music. \nBlues to Bop is an all too well-kept secret and\, in this author’s humble opinion\, one of the best annual music events in Switzerland. (I’m looking at you\, Montreux.) The premise is simple: the festival hosts artists from a wide range of sub-genres - from blues to bop\, toe-tapping boogie-woogie\, head-banging electric blues\, hand-waving gospel anthems\, and slow-dancing sax solos... \nThey've got it all at Blues to Bop in Lugano.\nIt is one of the only festivals in all of Europe dedicated to these genres. The artists come from all over the USA and Europe. A few mainstays like boogie-woogie piano star David Keys return nearly every year. Past musicians have included Popa Chubby\, a hard rocking blues guitar god. Or Roy Roberts who plays soulful\, expressive R’n’B. \nEvery night\, the artists take turns playing around the city on four different stages set in each of the squares. The events culminate in a Saturday night extravaganza on the main stage in Piazza Riforma. The atmosphere varies by stage; some have a quietly attentive audience who are carefully watching master musicians play their music. Others have a party atmosphere full of dancing\, clapping\, and singing along. \n \nAll of these genres are challenging to play and it is a real pleasure to watch these old masters and young re-inventors of genres that do not typically get airtime. It is definitely refreshing to see real instruments in a world of electronic music. \nLike to dance? Nothing gets the feet tapping like honky-tonk! And the best place to dance all night long is right in front of the main stage in Piazza Riforma. \nWhy I love Blues to Bop\nBetween the incredible music\, the beautiful setting and the invested audience\, Blues to Bop is genuinely my favorite music event of the year. It is a perfect way to dance the summer away. The atmosphere is congenial and laid back; you can even chat with the artists after their sets! There is no pretension or pressure here\, just four nights of great music\, a pleasant\, engaged audience\, and a stunning venue. \nIt's a rollicking good time\, and the best part - it’s free! \nMore information\nThe festival runs from August 29 through September 1 in Lugano and nearby Morcote. But if you can only come for one day\, then Saturday night is the one to go for. That night\, expect a multi-artist freestyle jam session on the main stage in Piazza Riforma! It is a truly spectacular show for anyone who loves these genres. \nFull program and artist list
