There will be a karate demonstration\, a Japanese harp concert and calligraphy workshops. \nOh\, and have I mentioned the food?\nFrom 11 AM until 3 PM\, there will be curry\, takoyaki (fried octopus)\, gyoza dumplins\, sushi and lots of varieties of Japanese sweets. \nFinally\, a hint: Those visitors who show up in a Japanese kimono or a cosplay outfit get free admission! I wonder how many Pokémons will make their way to the festival... \nThe KUSPO can easily be reached by public transportation: Simply take tram 10 or the S3 train to the Hofmatt stop.

DESCRIPTION:Memories of our previous stay at the Cresta Palace Hotel in Celerina include a breakfast buffet to write home about and a premium dining experience. \nWe were excited to find out that Head Chef Rolf J. Schmitz has come up with a unique concept: during two nights this September\, he and his team will be offering regional delicacies from the Engadine along with fresh Burgundy truffles and award winning Japanese miyazaki beef. What a great reason to return to Celerina! \n"Japan meets the Engadine" is for all the foodies out there.\nMost of you might not need an introduction to miyazaki-gyu\, a type of wagyu beef from the southern island of Kyushu. You likely already know that it is top of the line when it comes to Japanese meat. I have never actually tasted it and am more than curious to find out how Chef Schmitz is going to prepare it. The menu gives some clues already: crostini with wagyu lard and truffle\, as well as wagyu filet. \n \nBut apart from the meats\, the seven course meal includes other Japanese flavors\, too: there will be a serving of sushi rolls and nigiri sushi\, fish soup\, or a tangy yuzu sorbet topped with Japanese pepper. The second part of this dining experience will focus more on regional delicacies such as Swiss cheese or apricot tarts. \nFinally\, another exciting twist is the sake pairing: Marc Nydegger\, the owner of the shizuku shop in Zürich\, is a sake expert who will be pairing each course with the perfect Japanese sake. He has been on our radar for a while because we would love to learn more about his unique story. DESCRIPTION:The English stand-up show is an event which occurs four or five times a year. It features mainly local comedians - Swiss and expats. And it is the best place to laugh at the ups and downs of living in Switzerland! \nFrom my experience of hanging out at the English stand-up show\, the humor is highly relatable and witty. But beware whoever sits in the first row... For this edition\, the guest headliner is Jessica Michelle Singleton. She is great\, if you do not know her\, you better check her out!  \nThe tickets tend to get sold out quite fast\, so do not hesitate to get yours soon. (25 francs regular price\, 10 francs for students.) I actually went to this show last May and absolutely loved it. It even inspired me to try doing stand-up comedy myself... \nDoors open at 7 PM\, so why not have an adult beverage at the bar beforehand? The show starts at 8 PM. In exchange\, you will receive a set of VR goggles and HD earphones which will take you to another world. \nAn immersive VR experience in Zürich\nDepending on the night you pick\, a variety of short films from cartoons to documentaries will be bundled into each performance. With space for 150 viewers and two performances per night\, it is safe to say that Uetliberg will be turned into Switzerland's VR hot spot this summer. And thanks to their partner\, ewz\, there will be lawn chairs\, popcorn and smartphone charging stations. \nAmong the available VR films\, we picked the "Best of" selection. For instance\, one of the films is called "My Beautiful Home"\, an immersive journey into a slum in Africa. We are told that with the latest VR equipment there\, the content will be synchronized to the degree that each viewer experiences moments of joy\, fear\, love or tension at the very same moment. It is therefore fitting that the Limmatstadt joins the ranks of Lisbon\, Vienna and Berlin in hosting the Monocle Quality of Life Conference. \nWelcoming Monocle to Zürich\nIn April\, Tyler Brûlé's Monocle Magazine will open its new Zurich office in the Dufourstrasse in the city's publishing quarter. With the expansion in Switzerland\, Mr Brûle has also chosen to make Zürich the host city of the 2018 edition of Monocle's Quality of Life Conference. \nThis year\, there will be a particular focus on entrepreneurship and "what it takes to make it in the city". Expect an event featuring apéros\, drinks and an array of speakers on topics of urbanism\, publishing and retail. The cooking studios offer individual preparation stations\, so each participant will get plenty of hands-on experience while chopping\, boiling or sautéing a delicious meal. \n \nThe evening culminates with a tour of the Hiltl kitchen\, followed by a dinner featuring your own creations. At the end of the night\, you will get a goodie bag with recipes to take home. DESCRIPTION:Remember Belle from the Beauty and the Beast? This summer\, she will be singing and dancing her way across an open-air stage in Switzerland. \nFor the first time\, this French folk tale has been turned into a musical with German dialogue and lyrics. The protagonist\, Belle\, is once again held captive in a castle by a beast. But thanks to her bright mind and courageous nature\, she manages to see past the beast's appearance and make friends with those who live in the castle. In short\, she sees the beast for who he truly is. \nExpect a dynamic musical with dance scenes and extravagant couture. Ad for us\, we are very excited to see how this age old love story has been adopted for the Walensee stage... That's because the  Walensee offers a spectacular setting for an open-air musical. \nWith the stage being located at one end of the lake\, it faces the sunset at the other end. We have visited several musicals there before and have always treasured the experience. (A few years ago\, we got soaked during a musical\, though. But in the meantime\, all the seats are covered by an enormous rooftop!) \nDoors open at 6 PM and the musical begins at 7:45 PM. Please note that the dialogue and songs are entirely in German.

DESCRIPTION:It is a first for Zürich and a first to be held in Switzerland over sixty years. Motorsports returns to Switzerland - and this time it is with a twist. \nWith the future in mind and sustainability at the core of it\, Zürich has now entered an elite company of global cities to have hosted the FIA Formula E Championship. The residents and fans will get to witness twenty electric cars racing on the 2.46 km circuit which starts at the Enge Harbor next to Lake Zurich. \nWhat to expect on the day of the Formula E Championship race\nThough the actual race is taking place on June 10\, there will be loads of activities on Saturday at the Allianz E-Village (open from noon until 8 PM). The entry is free\, and you can check some of the cool things related to sustainability and electric car racing. On the race day itself\, the action begins from 9 AM with practice sessions\, followed by qualifying rounds starting at 2 PM. \nThe actual race will start at 6:04 PM\, and by 7 PM\, the race and prize distribution will conclude. \nHere is a visualization of the race track:\n\n \nThere are VIP tickets available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:For the fourth time\, the Photo International Club Zurich provides a unique opportunity to all local photographers regardless of experience level. \nYes\, we're looking at you! During PHOTO LAUNDRY\, show off your creative work in an improvised gallery made of laundry lines under open sky. The original idea of such an exhibition was born in St Petersburg\, Russia\, in 2010. Since then\, similar events have been organized in over 100 cities all over the world. Being the only "photo laundry" event in Switzerland so far\, PICZ has been organizing this event annually since 2015. \nIn order to participate at PHOTO LAUNDRY\, the photographs must be your work and they need to fit one of these (deliberately broad) themes:\n- Landscape/Nature\n- Street Photography\n- Multiple-/Long Exposure\n- Architecture/City Scape \nUp to three pictures per topic are allowed to be entered. The cool part is that you will be able to exchange your photographs according to the principle of "bring one – take one." (Pictures will be sheltered in case of rain. Or in the case of very bad weather\, the exhibition might be moved inside.) \nYou are welcome to write your name and a short message to the future owner on your pictures. The exhibition will feature photographs taken on analog and digital cameras. \nThe event is taking place at Quartierhaus 5 in Zürich. Participation is free of charge and everyone is welcome!

But how many knew that the red train is the Rhaetische Bahn (or RhB)\, and that this train experience in Eastern Switzerland has been under the protection of UNESCO World Heritage? It is safe to say that the Albula and Bernina railway lines are bucket list experiences not only for chasers of UNESCO sites\, but for anyone who calls Switzerland their home. \nThis June\, there will be a train festival to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage RhB!\nTrainGames - Join with your team! (10 AM - 5 PM)\nAt the train depot in Samedan\, there will be a number of fun activities where you can test your train brain. In one activity\, you will get to experience a day as a railway worker as you prepare a track. Inside the warehouse\, you and your teammates will need to maneuver a trolley while being blindfolded. This will be an Ascona first\, but the Gusto Festival has long established itself north of the Alps. We are excited about this premiere because the warm climate and lakefront location of Ascona are a perfect match. \nAs part of this year's gourmet festival\, the Romantik Hotel Castello Seeschloss as well as the following partner hotels will be hosting nightly events: Hotels Casa Berno\, Villa Orselina and Centro Dannemann. It will be a culinary journey through Argentina with lots of fire and passion... And on Friday\, May 25\, I shall humbly receive various cuts of maguro at Restaurant Metropol in Zürich! \nTaste of Japan on May 25 is a match made in heaven for tuna lovers!\nStarting at 6 PM\, a freshly delivered tuna from sustainable production will be prepared by a skilled Japanese chef. Flown in that same morning\, the fish is as fresh as can be. As part of a five course meal\, the master chef is then going to present a variety of delicate tuna dishes featuring akami\, chutoro and even otoro cuts. \nThink about it: How often do residents of a landlocked country like Switzerland have the privilege of tasting fresh sea food? The appeal of this event at Restaurant Metropol in Zürich lies in the combination of senses that will be stimulated: There is the ceremonial slicing of the tuna for carpaccio\, sushi and sashimi. The film festival that claimed this name is coming back to Zürich once again. \nThe GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival in Zürich\nFor the fourth time\, the GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival is bringing a line-up of Japanese films to Zürich. We were part of the initial festival several years ago\, and we have been counting the days for organizer Mizuki Mazbara to bring it back. \nThis year\, the screenings will take place in two hipster theaters in Zürich: The HOUDINI movie theater at Kalkbreite\, as well as the Riffraff at Langstrasse. \nThe particular appeal of this film festival is the unique line-up of the latest Japanese films. Mizuki Mazbara is well connected and gets to screen lots of potential movies as she visits other film festivals. At GINMAKU in Zürich\, we are privy to viewing the best of the best. \nThe presence of special guests such as directors or filmmakers make this film festival an immersive experience. Because usually\, there is a Q&A session taking place right after the screening\, allowing viewers to get behind-the-scenes insights. As you can tell\, GINMAKU is one of my favorite festivals\, hands down! \nPersonally\, I am looking forward to "Traces of Breath"\, a documentary gem shot by a 23-year-old:\n\n \nWe hope that you feel as excited as we are about the GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival!

SUMMARY:Open Wine Cellar Days in Ticino
DESCRIPTION:Every year for one weekend only\, Ticino vineyards will open their wine cellars to the public. It is the weekend of "Cantine Aperte". \nThis year\, some 85 producers will be participating\, making it near impossible to visit them all. Our friends in Ticino are telling us to pick one of the four regions and concentrate on the local growers there. Since there are two days for four regions\, you have the possibility to see up to half of the vineyards and their historic buildings. \nOpen Wine Cellar Days in Ticino\nWhen talking to wine growers\, I am always fascinated by the sheer passion they show for their products. In most cases\, we are looking at vineyards with a history over multiple generations. Skills and secrets have been passed on from grandfathers to fathers\, and from mothers to daughters. While I have visited winemakers in the Vaud region before\, I am looking forward to learn more about viticulture in Ticino this May! A combination of history and technology allows for this region's vintages to shine.  \nOne of my personal favorites is the typical white Merlot from Ticino\, so I will surely be looking out for my favorite bottle... Both on Saturday and Sunday\, participating cellars will be open from 10 AM to 6 PM. \nOur final advice: Bring along a designated driver or rent an e-bike to move between wine cellars. DESCRIPTION:If you have seen the film Sideways\, you most likely remember the scene in which Paul Giamatti's character\, Miles\, insists that he will not drink any Merlot. \nTo him\, Pinot is the king of the grapes because of how hard it is to grow. Many Swiss winemakers would love to agree with Miles. However\, there are a great many Merlot growers out there who would beg to differ. As a wine teacher myself\, I appreciate most wines\, and well-made Merlots fall into this class. \nChâteau Petrus 1982\, need I say more? Well alright then: \n\nTenuta dell’Ornellaia\nLa Mondotte\nCastello di Ama\nAmuse Bouche\nDuckhorn Vineyards' Three Palms\nIl Querceto (One of my Swiss favourites from Terreni alla Maggia)\n\n \nMondial du Merlot is the only competition exclusively dedicated to Merlot.\nIf you are into wines\, and especially Merlots and assemblages with Merlot\, you will not want to miss the final of the Mondial du Merlot being held at the Widder Hotel on May 16th. You will have the opportunity to try wines from 40 different producers coming from some 20 countries. Tasting these wines will show you the underlying characteristic of Merlot as well as regional differences coming from terroir\, climate and vinification. \nThe wines are categorized as follows: \n\nPure red Merlots\nRosés and Blancs de Noirs from Merlot\nOld vintages\nAssemblages\nGran Maestro du Merlot.\n\nThe general tasting is free to the public\, but you must secure a ticket before May 15th. There is also a workshop at 4 PM that can be attended for the cost of 30 francs. \nSo\, will you be drinking any Merlot?
