SUMMARY:Gusto Festival "Fuego & Pasión" (Ascona)
DESCRIPTION:Argentina and Ascona are about to meat meet as part of the Gusto Festival 2018. \nDuring four days\, Argentinian chefs will be firing up their stoves and BBQ grills in order to present the best dishes\, desserts and drinks. This will be an Ascona first\, but the Gusto Festival has long established itself north of the Alps. We are excited about this premiere because the warm climate and lakefront location of Ascona are a perfect match. \nAs part of this year's gourmet festival\, the Romantik Hotel Castello Seeschloss as well as the following partner hotels will be hosting nightly events: Hotels Casa Berno\, Villa Orselina and Centro Dannemann. It will be a culinary journey through Argentina with lots of fire and passion... There will be an evening of Argentina fine dining or a lakeside BBQ party. \nKitchen Party at the Castello Seeschloss\nWe are particularly fired up about the kitchen party that is about to go down at the Castello Seeschloss. The host of this castle hotel by the lake\, Daniel Heiserer\, has created the concept for an event that promises to be unforgettable. At five different stations on two floors\, the lucky guests will be treated by Argentine chef Mauricio Couly. His own Instagram account reveals that he is into cheese production\, so we are curious to experience his passion firsthand. \nThe Gusto Festival Kitchen Party takes place on June 2\, starting with an apéro at 7:00 PM. The all-inclusive price is 96 francs per person. \nAdditional Gusto Festival venues in Ascona\nAfter Buenos Aires and São Paulo\, the young Argentinian chef Leo Lanussol is bringing his urban kitchen to Villa Orselina on May 31. The following day on June 1\, Argentinian desserts of pastry chef Mariela Morán will be served at the event "6 Mani" at Hotel Casa Berno. \nAnd finally\, on the last day of the festival\, a typical Argentine gourmet grill party will take place at the Centro Dannemann grotto in nearby Brissago. Chef Mauricio Couly of Patagonia will present "asado"\, a traditional Argentine meal prepared on the open fire. DESCRIPTION:"Itadakimasu - I humbly receive!" \nThis Japanese expression quite fittingly describes my feeling when I learned about the upcoming Taste of Japan tuna ceremony in Zürich. \nThat's because when it comes to Japanese cuisine\, I cannot resist a dish with maguro in it\, the Japanese term for tuna. And on Friday\, May 25\, I shall humbly receive various cuts of maguro at Restaurant Metropol in Zürich! \nTaste of Japan on May 25 is a match made in heaven for tuna lovers!\nStarting at 6 PM\, a freshly delivered tuna from sustainable production will be prepared by a skilled Japanese chef. Flown in that same morning\, the fish is as fresh as can be. As part of a five course meal\, the master chef is then going to present a variety of delicate tuna dishes featuring akami\, chutoro and even otoro cuts. \nThink about it: How often do residents of a landlocked country like Switzerland have the privilege of tasting fresh sea food? The appeal of this event at Restaurant Metropol in Zürich lies in the combination of senses that will be stimulated: There is the ceremonial slicing of the tuna for carpaccio\, sushi and sashimi. It will be an experience for the eyes to watch the master chef as he filets the various parts of tuna. \n \nAnd most importantly\, tasting the maguro will be the main event for our pallets! From bibimbab to gimbap\, from daggaji to mandu and Korean beer: It's what we call true Seoul Food! \nShift into Discovery Mode at the Street Food Festival in Zürich!\nFor a serving of Swissness\, head to the Street Food Festival during the very first week in May. There will be a Swiss chalet village with specialties from the Alps. For the kids\, there is a fun town where they can learn to juggle\, do crafts or read books. \nAnd since the Street Food Festival is happening during FOOD ZURICH\, a designated area is going to play with this year's concept of "Sharing". Expect a variety of culinary events and workshops for the foodies among us. DESCRIPTION:GINMAKU stands for "silver screen" in the old Japanese language. The film festival that claimed this name is coming back to Zürich once again. \nThe GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival in Zürich\nFor the fourth time\, the GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival is bringing a line-up of Japanese films to Zürich. We were part of the initial festival several years ago\, and we have been counting the days for organizer Mizuki Mazbara to bring it back. \nThis year\, the screenings will take place in two hipster theaters in Zürich: The HOUDINI movie theater at Kalkbreite\, as well as the Riffraff at Langstrasse. \nThe particular appeal of this film festival is the unique line-up of the latest Japanese films. Mizuki Mazbara is well connected and gets to screen lots of potential movies as she visits other film festivals. At GINMAKU in Zürich\, we are privy to viewing the best of the best. \nThe presence of special guests such as directors or filmmakers make this film festival an immersive experience. Because usually\, there is a Q&A session taking place right after the screening\, allowing viewers to get behind-the-scenes insights. As you can tell\, GINMAKU is one of my favorite festivals\, hands down! \nPersonally\, I am looking forward to "Traces of Breath"\, a documentary gem shot by a 23-year-old:\n\n \nWe hope that you feel as excited as we are about the GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival!

SUMMARY:Open Wine Cellar Days in Ticino
DESCRIPTION:Every year for one weekend only\, Ticino vineyards will open their wine cellars to the public. It is the weekend of "Cantine Aperte". \nThis year\, some 85 producers will be participating\, making it near impossible to visit them all. Our friends in Ticino are telling us to pick one of the four regions and concentrate on the local growers there. Since there are two days for four regions\, you have the possibility to see up to half of the vineyards and their historic buildings. \nOpen Wine Cellar Days in Ticino\nWhen talking to wine growers\, I am always fascinated by the sheer passion they show for their products. In most cases\, we are looking at vineyards with a history over multiple generations. Skills and secrets have been passed on from grandfathers to fathers\, and from mothers to daughters. While I have visited winemakers in the Vaud region before\, I am looking forward to learn more about viticulture in Ticino this May! A combination of history and technology allows for this region's vintages to shine.  \nOne of my personal favorites is the typical white Merlot from Ticino\, so I will surely be looking out for my favorite bottle... Both on Saturday and Sunday\, participating cellars will be open from 10 AM to 6 PM. \nOur final advice: Bring along a designated driver or rent an e-bike to move between wine cellars. DESCRIPTION:If you have seen the film Sideways\, you most likely remember the scene in which Paul Giamatti's character\, Miles\, insists that he will not drink any Merlot. \nTo him\, Pinot is the king of the grapes because of how hard it is to grow. Many Swiss winemakers would love to agree with Miles. However\, there are a great many Merlot growers out there who would beg to differ. As a wine teacher myself\, I appreciate most wines\, and well-made Merlots fall into this class. \nChâteau Petrus 1982\, need I say more? Well alright then: \n\nTenuta dell’Ornellaia\nLa Mondotte\nCastello di Ama\nAmuse Bouche\nDuckhorn Vineyards' Three Palms\nIl Querceto (One of my Swiss favourites from Terreni alla Maggia)\n\n \nMondial du Merlot is the only competition exclusively dedicated to Merlot.\nIf you are into wines\, and especially Merlots and assemblages with Merlot\, you will not want to miss the final of the Mondial du Merlot being held at the Widder Hotel on May 16th. You will have the opportunity to try wines from 40 different producers coming from some 20 countries. Tasting these wines will show you the underlying characteristic of Merlot as well as regional differences coming from terroir\, climate and vinification. \nThe wines are categorized as follows: \n\nPure red Merlots\nRosés and Blancs de Noirs from Merlot\nOld vintages\nAssemblages\nGran Maestro du Merlot.\n\nThe general tasting is free to the public\, but you must secure a ticket before May 15th. There is also a workshop at 4 PM that can be attended for the cost of 30 francs. \nSo\, will you be drinking any Merlot?

But with all that music and wine\, there are just as many food choices. DESCRIPTION:How many selfies have you snapped this week? Thought so! \nIn order to take a selfie of a different kind\, we recently visited a new pop-up gallery in Zürich. Run by ifolor\, the Swiss family business that has been printing our photographs for nearly sixty years\, the TWINSIE technology is a step into the future. That's because a TWINSIE is a selfie on Steroids: It is a photo-realistic miniature replica in 3D! \nThanks to the latest 3D printing technique and the patient artists at ifolor in Kreuzlingen\, we will soon receive a package with our own Mini Me's. The printing process for each miniature model takes anywhere from eight to twelve hours. The scale is 1:10\, so about 17 cm in height for myself. And finally\, thanks to an extreme level of detail with some 390'000 color shades\, I expect my miniature self to be as realistic as can be. \n\n  \nThe TWINSIE Pop-up Gallery by ifolor\nThe location of the TWINSIE pop-up gallery is just a few steps from Zürich's Viadukt market. There\, the renowned interior designer\, Martina Nievergelt\, has created an abstract world consisting of whitewashed furniture and accessories. A small tribe of 3D printed figurines is nestled in between the lamps and picture frames\, making this a fun place for discovery. \nAt the center of the room\, there is a large photo booth boasting some 68 individual cameras. Based on our height\, these cameras will record several different positions for each participant. So you could play around by striking a pose or simply looking straight ahead. \n \nIt is free of charge to step into the photo booth and have your pictures taken. A short while later\, you will receive access to see your shots online\, from where you can decide to place an order. The introductory price is 149 francs plus shipping. \nThe 3D pop-up lab at Limmatstrasse 285 is open Mondays through Fridays from noon to 8 PM\, Saturdays from noon to 5 PM. SUMMARY:The first public showing of GURLITT "Confiscated Art" (Bern)
DESCRIPTION:The Kunstmuseum Bern and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn are simultaneously presenting a selection of items from the "Gurlitt art trove". \nThis is a big deal because for the first time\, these pieces of art are shown to the public. Here is the backstory: The collection was discovered due to tax investigations in 2012. Then in 2014\, Cornelius Gurlitt\, who was the son of the German art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt\, left 1500 works to the Kunstmuseum Bern. It was an unexpected move\, and the art museum has been working together with the German Lost Art Foundation to identify the original owners. \nThe museums are focusing on different aspects of the collection. The exhibition in Bern is showing 160 works which were classified as "Degenerate Art" by the National Socialists. The exhibit examines the political processes and historical events that led to the confiscation and condemnation of modern art. Particular attention is paid to the fate of the blacklisted and prosecuted artists as well as to the life of Hildebrand Gurlitt - in all its contradictions. \nIn the "Studio Provenane Research"\, visitors can discover the methods and the challenges of provenance research. My advice: Do not miss the SRF documentary "Gurlitts Schatten" which is being screened at the exhibition.
