SUMMARY:The traditional Onion Market in Bern - Zibelemärit
DESCRIPTION:Copyright Bern Tourismus\n\n\n\nAt the end of the chilly month of November\, Bern wakes up to the annual Onion Market. \n\n\n\nEvery fourth Monday in November\, this traditional market in praise of the humble little vegetable takes brightens up the (still dark) old town of Bern. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Onion Market is the one time of the year Bern goes bunkers over onions.\n\n\n\nHere's what the atmosphere at the Onion Market is like: you will see tons of perfected onion tresses all around. There is the smell of mulled wine\, garlic bread\, and onion pies in the air. There is confetti covering the streets (and the people.) And now and then\, you might be softly hit by a squeaky hammer. \n\n\n\nThe masses of onions in this market are unbelievable. In 2015\, there were nearly 60 tons of onions for sale on the single day the market takes place. \n\n\n\nThe market takes place in the old town of Bern between the train station and the Bundesplatz. \n\n\n\nThe best way to embrace this popular and very down-to-earth tradition is to put on your peppermint sugar bead necklace and stroll among the busy streets of Bern until dawn. Countless stands not only offer onions but different local delicacies and crafts. \n\n\n\nOur advice: visit the Onion Market even before 6 AM to avoid the crowds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNext level: for the truly brave\, the traditional Zibeleschwümme (Onion Swim) takes place on the Sunday before the market. At 1 PM at the Schönausteg\, watch the daredevil swimmers immerse in the bitterly cold Aare river.

SUMMARY:Don't miss the Santarun in Bern's old town
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to the once-a-year visitor with the red hat and the bag of gifts\, the Swiss have various names: Père Noël in the French speaking part\, Samichlaus in the German speaking part\, and Babbo Natale in Ticino. \nAnd for all the English speakers out there: Santa Claus. The city of Bern is jumping on the internationally recognized name as they launch the Santarun. \nWhile beating your own running record may be the reason to attend one of Switzerland's runs throughout the year\, the Santarun in December is all about fun. Beginning on the Bundesplatz in front of the parliament building\, the 2.6 km track crosses the historic old town where runners will be treated with mulled wine. (You will be completing this track twice for a total of 5.2 km.) \nAt the registration desk on site\, you will be able to pick one of these Santa outfits when you sign up. \nRegister online by Nov 15

SUMMARY:Gotthelf Märit is a historic farmers market
DESCRIPTION:Copyright Gotthelf Märit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe annual Gotthelf Märit in Bern's Emmental is a unique opportunity to step back into the 19th century. \n\n\n\nAt the charming Gotthelf Märit farmers market\, vendors in traditional clothing create a scene of the time when Swiss novelist J. Gotthelf lived. The many booths and activities\, as well as the entertainment program\, showcase the Swiss artisanal mastership\, traditions\, and folklore. \n\n\n\nAre you curious how everyday life used to be back then? Try your hand in different traditional activities like bookbinding\, forging\, or lace-making. Or have you ever seen someone do laundry without a washing machine? \n\n\n\nCopyright Gotthelf Märit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, there will be a lovely entertainment program - naturally including yodeling\, alphorns\, Örgeli music\, and other traditional performances. \n\n\n\nAnd finally\, do not miss this chance to get your hands on some delicacies at the farmer's market: crunchy bread\, Emmentaler cheese\, and other local products. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInsider tip: book a stay at the Hotel Landgasthof Kemmeriboden-Bad\n\n\n\nThe Invernizzi family runs a gem of a hotel on the other end of the scenic Emmental: Hotel Landgasthof Kemmeriboden-Bad in Schangnau. This is also the place that serves Switzerland's largest meringues... They are simply heavenly! \n\n\n\nAfter the 19th-century farmers market and a leisurely drive through the Emmental valley\, nothing feels better than spending a night in a luxury hayloft. You heard right: aptly named Stroh Deluxe\, this loft features a boxspring bed surrounded by straw as well as the whirlpool in a wooden barrel. It's a typically Swiss experience to write home about. \n\n\n\nCopyright Hotel Landgasthof Kemmeriboden-Bad

DESCRIPTION:(Feature image copyright LID.ch/Flickr) \n\n\n\nCows wearing flower crowns\, looking their best\, and posing in front of... the Swiss parliament building! \n\n\n\nThat's the Sichlete folk festival in Bern. The "Sichlete" festival celebrates the arrival of the harvest time and is a colorful mix of an alpine descent tradition\, cow beauty pageant\, and livestock exhibition. It even involves a cowbell ringer performance. \n\n\n\nBesides witnessing the selection of the most beautiful cows\, you can also visit an adorable petting zoo\, see cow milking demonstrations and listen to the sound of alphorns while eating some local delicacies right in the heart of the Swiss capital. A pasture features mother cows with their calves. \n\n\n\nPlease note that a valid Corona certificate is required.

SUMMARY:Chästeilet is heaven for Swiss cheese lovers (Hasliberg)
DESCRIPTION:Copyright Meiringen-Hasliberg Tourismus\n\n\n\nFor years and years\, the "Chästeilet" has been marking the end of the summer. \n\n\n\nSummer is the typical season for cheese making in the Swiss Alps. During this old mountain tradition\, the farmers divide the cheese of that summer among each other in the most fairest way. Mägisalp (Hasliberg) in the Bernese Oberland is the happening place\, and crowds of spectators flock there to celebrate. \n\n\n\nIf you cannot imagine your daily life without a delicious slice of Swiss cheese\, do not miss the chance to purchase one of the beautiful yellow discs straight out of farmers' hands right there on the spot. \n\n\n\nBesides all the masses of cheese\, there is a lot of fun with traditional music\, food\, refreshments\, and flower-adorned cows measuring their way down to the valley after a few summer months spent high up in the mountains. \n\n\n\nEvents start at 11 AM\, and there will be an alpine descent at 2 PM.

SUMMARY:Communal Easter Egg Bashing (Bern)
DESCRIPTION:Every year on a late Easter Sunday morning\, people gather at the Kornhaus square in Bern to take the eggs they have beautifully colored to a crash test. \nThe rules are simple – the strongest egg wins. The big ones love it as much as the small ones! The old Bernese tradition of egg fighting (Eiertütschete) is a game for everyone. \nKeep in mind that you have to bring some boiled\, speckled eggs on your own as they are not for sale on the spot. The event starts at 9 AM on Kornhausplatz in Bern.

SUMMARY:Traditional Onion Market - Zibelemärit (Bern)
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the chilly month of November\, Bern wakes up in the dark hours for the annual Onion Market. This tradition has been praising the humble little vegetable for nearly 200 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe one time of the year Bern goes bunkers over onions\n\n\n\nHere's what the atmosphere at the Onion Market is like: You see tons of perfected onion tresses all around you\, the smell of mulled wine\, garlic bread\, and onion pies is in the air\, there is confetti covering the streets (and people) and now and then you’re softly being hit by a squeaky hammer. \n\n\n\nThe masses of onions in this market are unbelievable. In 2015\, farmers from near and far sold nearly 60 tons of onions! \n\n\n\nThe best way to embrace this popular and very down-to-earth tradition is to put on your peppermint sugar bead necklace\, see and eat around\, and stroll among the busy streets of Bern until dawn. Countless stands not only offer onions but different local delicacies and crafts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy advice: To avoid the crowds\, visit the market before 6 AM.\n\n\n\nFor the truly brave\, the traditional Zibeleschwümme (Onion Swim) takes place on the Sunday before the market. At 1 PM at the Schönausteg\, watch the daredevil swimmers immerse in the bitterly cold Aare river.

SUMMARY:Horischlittenrennen (Grosse Scheidegg to Schwarzwaldalp)
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the local culture can be really fun. \nTry it in Grindelwald by going to the annual Horischlittenrennen sledge race. The Hori sledge race is the time when you can see this interesting means of transportation being used to be fast - or last! \n \nAnd do not just stand there – rent a sledge yourself and rush down from the nearby Faulhorn to Grindelwald on the longest sledge track in the world (15 km)! \nTake the Postauto bus from Schwarzwaldalp to the top of the race track (last bus leaves at 11:30 AM). SUMMARY:The first public showing of GURLITT "Confiscated Art" (Bern)
DESCRIPTION:The Kunstmuseum Bern and the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn are simultaneously presenting a selection of items from the "Gurlitt art trove". \nThis is a big deal because for the first time\, these pieces of art are shown to the public. Here is the backstory: The collection was discovered due to tax investigations in 2012. Then in 2014\, Cornelius Gurlitt\, who was the son of the German art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt\, left 1500 works to the Kunstmuseum Bern. It was an unexpected move\, and the art museum has been working together with the German Lost Art Foundation to identify the original owners. \nThe museums are focusing on different aspects of the collection. The exhibition in Bern is showing 160 works which were classified as "Degenerate Art" by the National Socialists. The exhibit examines the political processes and historical events that led to the confiscation and condemnation of modern art. Particular attention is paid to the fate of the blacklisted and prosecuted artists as well as to the life of Hildebrand Gurlitt - in all its contradictions. \nIn the "Studio Provenane Research"\, visitors can discover the methods and the challenges of provenance research. My advice: Do not miss the SRF documentary "Gurlitts Schatten" which is being screened at the exhibition. It gives an insight into the exceptional story of the "Gurlitt art trove". \nGet more information or download the exhibition guide.

SUMMARY:Open doors at the Lohn Government Residence (Kehrsatz)
DESCRIPTION:Let us share a small secret with you... \nThere is a hidden estate near Bern where such authorities as Queen Elisabeth\, Fidel Castro and W. Churchill used to stay overnight when visiting Bern. Twice a year\, it opens its doors to the public. \nInside the Lohn Government Residence in Kehrsatz\nThe small Lohn estate might look humble from the outside\, but it is adorned with exuberant rooms and hides rich history. Once a countryside residence for a wealthy Bernese family\, now it serves the Swiss government as a peaceful meeting point for hosting politicians and royals. \nDuring the day of open doors\, you can walk around the guest house which until 1994 used to host many world-renown political figures. You can visit the rooms they have stayed at where meetings were held. An introductory video will tell you interesting facts about the property\, and at 3 PM you can even join a free tour. \nThe much photographed Béatrice-von-Wattenwyl-Haus in Bern's old town serves a similar purpose and opens its doors four times a year. \nOur advice: Talk to the employees of the Lohn estate. They know curious stories and have been there when some exclusive guests with their presence for a short time have turned the house into one of the most important venues in Bern - if not in the whole of Switzerland.
