SUMMARY:Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival NIFFF
DESCRIPTION:Fans of genre cinema don't want to miss out on a world-renowned Swiss film festival: the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival. \nBack for its 20th edition this summer\, NIFFF is the one and only genre film festival in Switzerland\, showcasing a variety of films from five continents. The selected films fall broadly into one or more of three main categories: Fantasy\, Asian Cinema\, and Digital Images. \nThe festival website has a bit more fun in bestowing the films with unique descriptions\, such as apocalyptic zombie comedy (Get the Hell Out\, Taiwan)\, fungal eco-horror (Gaia\, South Africa)\, and techno-mystical survival (In the Earth\, U.K.). \nAs with any film festival\, the entries are also in the running for various awards\, including an international competition and an H.R. Giger award for the best Swiss shorts. \n  \nWhen is the 2021 Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival?\nThe NIFFF runs from July 2 to 10 at six venues throughout Neuchâtel\, including one open-air theater. The festival will be showcasing over 50 feature films\, as well as assorted shorts and immersive VR productions. \n  \nSome highlights from the program of NIFFF 2021\nDue to the ongoing pandemic\, the seating capacity for each film will be limited this year\, with only 100 tickets available for indoor showings and 264 for the open-air venue. Tickets can be purchased online for 16 francs each\, though multi-passes and festival passes are also available for die-hard filmgoers. \nAs a half-Filipina\, I'm particularly looking forward to the feature Midnight in a Perfect World by filmmaker Dodo Dayao. \nSet in a near-utopian Manila in the not-too-distant future where power outages are nonetheless still frequent occurrences\, the film explores the horrors lurking in the darkness\, likely a metaphor for the trauma of living through years of martial law imposed by Marcos’ dictatorship in the 1970s and 80s\, and the ongoing brutal and deadly war on drugs of Duterte’s Philippines. \n(Copyright NIFFF)\n \nAnother film that has piqued my interest is the documentary A Glitch in the Matrix. It explores simulation theory\, or the idea that reality as we know it is not reality at all and that we are all living in a video game-like simulation controlled by a higher intelligence. \nFor fans of science fiction and conspiracy theories\, this film will have you debating about the concept of free will with your friends and family all summer. \n(Copyright NIFFF)\n \nFor fans of virtual reality\, NIFFF is also showcasing an assortment of immersive experiences this year. Consider the Taiwanese satirical comedy Great Hoax: The Moon Landing in which you get to fake a moon landing for the Taiwanese government. \nAlternatively\, if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a bat\, you’re in luck\, thanks to the Swiss VR short Batvision. \nThere's something for everyone at this one-of-a-kind film festival\, all set in the charming lakeside town of Neuchâtel. \n  \nDon't miss out and book your tickets before it's too late!\n \nView the full program and buy your festival tickets online\n \n \nPublished by Stephanie Bowman

SUMMARY:"Sauvage" is the perfect exhibit for families this summer
DESCRIPTION:The temporary exhibition "Sauvage" at the Natural History Museum in Neuchâtel is an eye-opening experience for children and adults alike. \n\n\n\nThe title "Sauvage" (French for "wild") conjures up many different interpretations from every individual\, so the curators asked people what word they thought of when they heard the word sauvage. They have then adorned the entrance to the exhibition with the most common responses. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSauvage is an immersive and interactive exhibition\, seeking to make learning fun for the whole family.\n\n\n\nThis temporary exhibit touches on themes such as mass tourism and extinction. It aims to show children (and remind adults) that animals are sentient and intelligent beings that have more in common with us than we like to believe. \n\n\n\nIt’s a great way to educate ourselves on the fragility of life on our planet. And it forces us to rethink why we believe ourselves to be the master race and why we exploit animals the way we do. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are courageous enough to enter the seemingly alive object in the middle of a dark room\, you will be rewarded with a high-definition recording of animal sounds and vocalizations. Meanwhile\, the massive figure enveloping you inhales and exhales\, making for an exhilarating\, multi-sensory experience.  \n\n\n\nContinuing with the "wild" theme\, the exhibition also poses the question of what is still considered wild when it comes to animals. \n\n\n\nA video showing a serene vista of gazelle frolicking and feeding is quickly turned on its head when we view the screen on the other side of the wall\, revealing what goes on behind the scenes of a safari in Kenya. Is mass tourism blurring the definition of "wild"? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA perfect exhibit for the summer break\n\n\n\nThe education doesn’t stop there\, as there are plenty of interactive games and videos for families to enjoy\, including one where you listen to animal noises and try to figure out which of two animals is emanating the sound. The answers may surprise you! \n\n\n\nAfter exploring the indoor exhibition\, you can step into the courtyard to marvel at the work of artist Paolo Grassino\, depicting the hostility and vulnerability of the human species. \n\n\n\nThose wanting to extend their "Sauvage" experience may even camp in the courtyard overnight. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition runs until August 29\, so there is plenty of time to visit during the summer holidays. \n\n\n\nPlease note: the exhibition is mostly in French\, with some text written in German. An English-speaking guide can be requested for those who would like a more intimate tour. \n\n\n\nThe museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday\, 10 AM to 6 PM. Admission is 8 francs for adults\, 4 francs for students\, and free of charge for children 16 and under.

SUMMARY:Festi’Neuch is Neuchâtel’s cool\, intimate music festival
DESCRIPTION:(Photograph copyright Pierk Falco) \nNeuchâtel's annual outdoor festival has grown each year since it first made music on the lake shore in 2001 with five groups. \nThis year's line-up has 50 acts across a wide range of modern music genres\, with international headliners like Patti Smith\, Midnight Oil\, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals\, Zazie\, Gaëtan Roussel\, Inna de Yard\, Lomepal\, Ska-P\, Kery James\, Sum 41 and others. Swiss stars Sophie Hunger and Bastian Baker will also be performing\, not to mention Neuchâtel's own\, The Rambling Wheels\, Charles in the Kitchen and Emilie Zoé. \nMultiple open air stages\nBesides the main stage\, there will be two smaller venues on the festival grounds\, plus La Plage where DJs on a mini-stage actually set up on the lake\, conjuring techno\, house and beyond to get dancers into their trances – in or out of the water. \nEven weirder\, La Silent Party\, is a space where you are given a set of headphones with three channels\, allowing you to literally channel any of the three DJs spinning their mixes. Or take off your headphones and watch the silent kinetic dance spectacle. Of course\, there will be kiosks with plenty of good fest-food and drink. \n(Photograph copyright Carine Veluzat) \nOff-Stage performance art for families and everyone\nFesti'Neuch gets family friendly with its off-stage “Art de rue” performances at various spots around the festival grounds. Sunday is the best day to bring the little ones\, with earlier performances and activities geared toward families. \nAfter hours\, beyond the boundaries\nThis year for the first time\, "Les Afternatives" will offer late night music at three venues around town – everything from electronica\, funk and Afro-beat to retro indie rock\, hip-hop and (gasp) disco. \nReady\, steady\, go? Order your tickets online fast; Friday is already sold out. \nA local's tip for Festi'Neuch\nDon't miss Neuchâtel band\, The Rambling Wheels\, whose music is infectious\, fun and original. \n(Photograph copyright The Rambling Wheels) \nCost: CHF 75 per day in advance (CHF 80 at the gate)\, CHF 169 for 3 days\, CHF 210 for all four days. Free for ages 0 to 3\, and CHF 3 per day for kids 4 to 12. VIP space CHF 185 per day (CHF 135 on Sunday).\nGetting there: From the train station\, it is a short walk down to the lake.
