DESCRIPTION:What should be the balance between giving freedom to lawmakers and voters to enact anything they want and retaining some ‘fundamental’ rights that may not be breached? Is giving judges such a large say a useful means to protect our rights\, or does it simply bypass democracy? \nIndeed\, the relationship between human rights\, democracy and sovereignty seems more controversial\, obscure and convoluted than ever. The Zurich Salon hosts a Battle of Ideas festival debate on “Human Rights\, Sovereignty and Democracy”. Lining up for battle are Prof. Hans Ueli Vogt\, Luke Gittos (from UK) and their opponents Andrea Huber\, Dr. Peter Studer and Prof. Matthias Mahlmann. \nJoin this thought-provoking debate and form your own opinion. The official website has suggested reading material and it lists the various speakers\, from philosophers to lawyers. \nThe debate will be held in English. Doors open at 7 PM\, with the debate beginning at 7:30 PM.
