SUMMARY:Illuminarium Light Festival in Zürich 2029
DESCRIPTION:By now\, the Illuminarium Light Festival in Zürich is an institution. \n\n\n\nShorter days with longer nights equal more reasons to hang out at Christmas markets… As such\, we are very glad that the Illuminarium Light Festival once again sparks joy in the courtyard of the Swiss National Museum. \n\n\n\nConveniently located at the Zurich main station\, this is more than a Christmas market: it’s rather a festival grounds of colorful illuminations\, food and beverage vendors\, music\, and light projections. There are fondue stalls\, attractions\, and an eclectic bar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2023 Highlights of the Illuminarium Light Festival\n\n\n\nFrom November 9 to December 30\, the (otherwise quiet) courtyard of the Landesmuseum is spreading the holiday spirit. Simply step through the large gate into this admission-free Christmas Wonderland. There\, you will find various vendors offering everything from mulled wine to cotton candy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe especially like the indoor bar with its living room atmosphere. The stylists have obviously put a lot of thought into the decorations\, which made us feel “at home” while sipping on a generous 14-franc Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom prior years\, we know that Illuminarium Zurich can get very busy as the after-work crowds gather. So\, the earlier you can get there to reserve a standing table or lounge\, the better… Seats at the indoor Fondue Palace should be reserved in advance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCyberCity offers an immersive digital experience on the World Wide Web. Using advanced projectors\, the Digital Art Show transforms the museum walls into a gigantic virtual canvas. Contemporary electronic music adds to the atmosphere of this digital universe\, which can be enjoyed for an admission of roughly 10 francs. \n\n\n\nIn another admission-only area located a bit off to the side of the courtyard\, there is a nightly projection of a Christmas story featuring Yuki. The main character is a sort of cyclope yeti who will surely steal your heart. \n\n\n\nThe larger-than-life story is projected onto three building surfaces of the Swiss National Museum. We found it very clever how the architectural features of the buildings were incorporated into the projections. \n\n\n\n(Narrated entirely in Swiss German\, Yuki’s story is definitely targeted at younger crowds. As for us\, we felt a bit underwhelmed after the 15-minute show.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know:\n\n\n\n\nLocated at the courtyard of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich.\n\n\n\nTake the “Landesmuseum” exit at the Zurich Main Station or get off the tram at “Bahnhofquai/HB” and walk a few steps to the entrance.\n\n\n\nChildren aged 0 to 5 enjoy free admission.\n\n\n\nIt’s open rain or shine\, so show up with warm\, weather-resistant clothing.\n\n\n\nThe festival is entirely cashless\, so bring your cards or digital wallets.\n\n\n\n\nCheck out our listing of Swiss Christmas markets.

SUMMARY:Switzerland: Amazingly Ambivalent (Exhibit)
DESCRIPTION:Copyright Swiss National Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany Swiss share a sentiment that their country is a cut above the rest. They might tell you that nature is breathtakingly beautiful\, the streets are sparkling clean\, and the infrastructure is top-notch. \n\n\n\nThis inside-out view does not necessarily match how the world perceives Switzerland. Is it an idyllic paradise\, or a surveillance state where suspicious neighbors check up on each other? Is it a humanitarian country or rather an island ruled by banks and multinationals? \n\n\n\nThe Swiss National Museum in Zürich is dedicating a temporary exhibit to bring us face to face with these bewildering contrasts: Amazingly Ambivalent. By facing these divergent views\, we will get to reflect on our own relationship with Switzerland. And who knows\, we might even uncover what really makes the Swiss tick… \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCopyright Swiss National Museum

SUMMARY:Let's play! An exhibit about the history of video games
DESCRIPTION:(Key visual copyright Swiss National Museum/Roli Hofer) \nPacman\, Tetris and Super Mario Bros. are names that bring up memories. Yet just a couple of decades ago\, video games were looked at as a gimmick. \nThis spring\, the Swiss National Museum in Zürich is dedicating a temporary exhibit to the history of video games. \nAs one of the world’s top leisure activities\, video games have surely established themselves in popular culture. (Globally\, some 2.5 billion people play video games!) The evolution from Commodore 64 to today’s virtual reality experiences in cyberspace is remarkable. \nThis exhibit looks at the 50-years old history of electronic games\, giving visitors lots of opportunities to get hands on. When is the last time you played Pacman? Personally\, I cannot wait to see this exhibit and get my game on… Who knows? I might even start to spend my lunch hours there! \nTest your skills in this browser based game especially developed for the exhibit. \nOpening hours: Tue – Sun 10 AM to 5 PM\, Thu 10 AM to 7 PM\, closed on Mon \nMore information \n \n(All photographs copyright Swiss National Museum)

SUMMARY:Heidi in Japan - Swiss National Museum in Zürich
DESCRIPTION:アルプスの少女ハイジ or “Arupusu no Shōjo Haiji”: this is the title of the 1974 anime series that put the Swiss Alps on the map for many Japanese. \nIt is a story we all know too well: orphaned mountain girl is taken to the city yet yearns for the alps. Ever since the end of the 19th century\, Heidi has been conquering the world. But it was not until the release of the cartoon “Heidi\, Girl of the Alps” in Japan that Heidi turned into a global phenomenon. \nThe makers of the animated series went on to co-found the world-famous Studio Ghibli\, creator of numerous films and series. Now through October 13\, 2019\, the Swiss National Museum in Zürich is dedicating an exhibition to Heidi. The focus lies on the fusion of the Swiss and Japanese culture\, as well as on the evolution of the anime series. \n\n  \n“Heidi in Japan” Focus Day on Friday\, Aug 30\nFrom 9 AM to 4:30 PM\, the Swiss National Museum along with the University of Zurich will be hosting an exciting series of events. Among other things\, the University’s Institute of Art History studies the Japanese view of Switzerland. The idealized image of Switzerland in the popular animated film series\, “Heidi\, Girl of the Alps”\, has contributed significantly to shaping that view. \nDuring this focus day\, you will get to discuss interesting questions such as “would Johanna Spyri still recognize her Heidi today?” or “can translations change a character?” More than 40 years after its release\, the idyllic images of nature and the Swiss mountains in the anime film still evoke a sense of yearning in many Japanese. \nAnd there will be a musical treat to complement the event: Switzerland’s Schwarz Family will have an appearance – they have recorded the original soundtrack of the cartoon series without understanding a word of Japanese! \nActivities for children: Check out this nifty sheet with Heidi games or this printable cut-out activity. \nOpening hours: Tue – Sun 10 AM to 5 PM\, Thu 10 AM to 7 PM\, closed on Mon (guided tours including food tasting every other Saturday) \nMore information \n(All photographs copyright Swiss National Museum)

SUMMARY:World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:It is the time of year when the world’s best press photographs are on display in Zürich. \nWorld Press Photo is an exhibit that shows the world through the lens of press photographers. The courageous men and women are there when a crisis takes place\, capturing humanity during its weakest moments. Be it the unfolding of the refugee crisis\, wars and conflicts\, social issues or protests\, press photographers are on site to document the events unfolding and to share these impressions with the rest of us. \n\n  \nThis year\, new forms of photo and video journalism will supplement the World Press Photo Exhibition.\nThe following are some first-hand impressions captured by our own press photographer\, Cloudia Chen\, when she attended a media preview. The tour was narrated by Mr. Jerzy Brinkhof\, the curator of World Press Photo\, as well as Mrs. Magdalena Herrera\, President of the World Press Photo jury and Director of Photography at GEO France. \n \n \n \nMore information about World Press Photo Exhibition 2018. SUMMARY:Dada Universal Exhibit (Zürich)
DESCRIPTION:“DADA WAS THERE BEFORE THERE WAS DADA.” \nThe radical artistic and literary movement “Dada” was founded in Zürich exactly 100 years ago. Dada gained instant fame around the world\, but what exactly does the word “Dada” imply? \nIs it nonsense and absurdity? Not exactly\, because Dada was a response to the madness of World War I. The Swiss National Museum in Zürich is now holding an exhibit to commemorate this important anniversary: 100 years since the birth of Dadaism. \nThe exhibition not only features works of Dada art and literature\, but also examines the global and universal impact of the Dada movement right up to the present day. Look out for the legendary “Fountain” by Marcel Duchamp\, which is essentially the “Mona Lisa” of Dadaism. And in a whirl through time and space\, the Dada esprit comes alive through objects\, projections and poems\, involving all the human senses. \nBecause: “DADA EST TATOU. TOUT EST DADA.” \nCheck out additional Dada events

Coinciding with Zürich’s Night at the Museum on Saturday\, September 6\, the general public is invited to get an exclusive peek of the new building in progress! \nThe open house offers people the chance to see the current state of the renovation and extension work.
