If we had to pick which Swiss region maintains the strongest brand, it would likely be Appenzell. The infamous advertisements featuring cheese makers who are guarding their top secret Appenzeller recipe have stuck. And the idyllic pictures of Alpine cattle drives seem from another world. Truly, we are dealing with a very unique society preserving its heritage!

The gorgeous photography book “Appenzellerland” allows the rest of us to approach the region of Appenzell from at least two dozen angles.

A rich collection of essays highlights topics such as history, hospitality, and local poetry. Local photographer Andreas Butz lets us in on his version of modern day Appenzell. And a curious series of portraits introduces a group of compassionate locals, such as musicians, a beer brewer, a nun and a lumber jack.
