Zürich’s Farmers Markets Have You Covered

Zurich Buerkliplatz Farmers MarketNothing beats bringing home a bundle of fresh flowers and a bunch of carrots with some dirt on them! These are just some of the things we found while checking out Zürich's farmers markets this summer...

But after repeatedly exceeding our budget due to the many tempting goods hijacking our senses, we decided to limit the cash and shopping bags we would bring to the market in the first place!

So use our newly compiled guide to find out the specialty of each farmers market, as well as when and where to get your veggie kick in the vicinity of Zürich!

Bürkliplatz Farmers Market (Tue, Fri)

Zurich Farmers Markets - Buerkliplatz

Facing the lake at the end of Bahnhofstrasse is Bürkliplatz, a tree covered plaza which is host to the bi-weekly farmers market. Among the markets featured here, Bürkliplatz probably carries the most high-quality - and highly priced - foods. One reason for the latter may be its central location, attracting many tourists and locals alike.

Fresh flowers, local fish, regional specialty cheese and baked goods are some of the goods you can find here. By the way: If you show up at Bürkliplatz on a Saturday, you can enjoy one of the largest flea markets around.

Helvetiaplatz Farmers Market (Tue, Fri)

Zurich Farmers Markets - Helvetiaplatz

Meet the United Nations of farmers markets! Helvetiaplatz has got to be the most international market in Zürich, reflecting the diverse population of Kreis 4. Thus, you can expect a nice assortment of exotic products among the more traditional staples.

It should be said that due to the nature of this market, do not be afraid to haggle and bargain for prices. Just imagine that you are in a far-off country and it will come naturally...

Oerlikon Farmers Market (Wed, Sat)

Zurich Farmers Markets - OerlikonThe Oerlikon farmers market packs a large variety of goods on the square behind Swissotel. Apart from the usual suspects, we encountered freshly made ravioli pasta and a sizable selection of antipasti and olives.

Zurich Farmers Markets - Oerlikon

In terms of flowers, we think that Oerlikon has the best selection (and value). You can find ready-made bouquets for reasonable prices alongside individual flowers for as little as 1 Franc each!

Marktplatz Im Viadukt (Mon - Sat)

Zurich Farmers Markets - Markthalle Im ViaduktZürich's only indoor farmers market has got you covered six days a week - quite literally! While some staples are slightly more expensive than at a local grocery store, most of the prices for fruits, veggies and breads are right in line.

Also, do not hesitate to ask for free samples! Most vendors will be glad to accommodate you when asked "Könnte ich das probieren?"
