5 free things to do in Zürich in winter

Why not enjoy some free activities in Zürich and save those Francs for Christmas presents instead? I asked myself this question and "free" was simply an offer I could not refuse...

Plus, Zürich is at its most magical during the winter months anyway, so it is worth calling up a few friends to spend an afternoon out on the town! And please don't forget to share your favorite free things to do in Zürich with your fellow Newly Swissed readers!

1. Real Fiction Cinema

The plot: Reality.
The protagonist: Life (starring itself).
The premise: Watch reality from the perspective of a mobile movie theater. Classical movie tunes included.
The place: Three Zürich locations available from Nov 18 - Dec 16, 2010

2. Kunsthaus Museum

What: A collection of world renowned art at your fingertips, including pieces by Chagall, Giacometti, Monet, Munch, Picasso, van Gogh, and Warhol
When: Free admission to permanent collection all day Wednesdays, Picasso special exhibit running through Feb 2011
Where: Heimplatz 1, 8001 Zürich

3. Migros Museum of Contemporary Art

What: An eclectic collection of contemporary art, often displayed in large installations which leave you feeling stunned and refreshed at the same time.
When: Free admission on Thursdays from 5 - 8 PM
Where: Albisriederstrasse 199a, Zürich
Bonus: Before you visit, check out the free views from the top of the Freitag store. Then, hop onto Bus 72 towards Triemli for a few stops and get off at Hubertus.

4. Ice-Skating at Heuried and Oerlikon Rinks

What: Practice your spins or participate in a pick-up match with locals!
When: Every 1st Wednesday of the month through March 2011, from 6 - 9:30 PM (so Dec 1, Jan 5, Feb 2)
Where: Sportamt Heuried (trams 9/14 to "Heuried"), Sportamt Oerlikon (Trams 10/14 to "Sternen Oerlikon", tram 11 to "Messe/Hallenstadion" or bus 63/94 to "Hallenbad Oerlikon")

5. Cactus Nursery (Sukkulentensammlung)

What: If art exhibits and ice-skating have left you breathless, this city nursery featuring more than 6500 kinds of cactuses and other succulent plants is sure to provide a calming experience!
When: 7 days a week, 9 AM - 4:30 PM
Where: Mythenquai 88, Zürich (Busses 161/165 from Bürkliplatz to "Sukkulenten-Sammlung" or tram 7 to "Brunaustrasse")
