Summer is on in Locarno, and with summer comes the most awaited time of the year: The Locarno Film Festival.
This year, the festival will take place on from August 1 to 11, and it will be the 71st edition of one of the oldest movie festivals in the history of cinema. Here are six highlights that you should not miss if you plan on visiting the festival.
#locarnoexperience at laRotonda
In a way, laRotonda is a festival within the festival. Just a few meters away from the glamour of Locarno’s old town and the Piazza Grande, laRotonda is a lively place to spend a perfect evening in Locarno.
There is a crafts market with handmade goods, and there is a huge selection of food stalls with dishes from all over the world. We’re talking spicy vegan curry or decadent, chocolate filled Belgian gaufre. Not to mention, a different concert takes place every night! You can take a stroll around laRotonda or spend the whole night there to enjoy the truly unique atmosphere.
Watch a movie on Piazza Grande
The most important movies of the festival will be shown in the magnificent setting of Piazza Grande. Be sure to buy your ticket and reserve a seat under the stars, surrounded by old town buildings. Nothing captures the feeling of the Locarno Film Festival better than this.
Go star-spotting around Locarno
Visit Locarno during the day or the evening and keep on eye for actors and directors spending their time around the city. You may find yourself drinking an espresso next to one of your favorite stars. This year’s guest of honor will be Ethan Hawke, so who knows? You might be lucky enough to meet him in person!
#locarnoexperience at Locarno Garden La Mobiliare
The Locarno Garden is a gem among all the festival events. A beautiful setting inside a garden in the heart of the old town, there will be music, food and drinks and an entirely relaxed atmosphere.
We were there last year and we fell in love with the big colorful cushions, the wooden benches and the soft lights. It is the perfect place to visit while waiting for your next movie.
See a movie at Palacinema
Newly restored for last year’s 70th anniversary, the Palacinema is a beautiful venue for movie lovers. Think elegant, modern design meets a top quality movie theater.
Spot the Leopard madness all over town
We have already covered the Pardo madness that hits Locarno when the festival arrives. It is much fun to see the entire town transformed into a parade of big felines, leopard patterns and general jungle colors…
The full festival program will be revealed on July 11, 2018, at 5 PM. Check out Locarno Film Festival website for all the latest information.
