Having celebrated my first birthday at my parents' market booth, I always look forward to bundling up and meeting friends at a Christmas market. I know many of the markets in the canton of Zurich, but researching this list of Swiss Christmas markets has opened my eyes to some true gems...

Chur: During this pre-advent weekend, the oldest town in Switzerland features some 160 market booths as part of the Churer Weihnachtsmarkt. Open Friday from 2 to 9 PM and Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM, get inspired by all the handcrafted gifts - from wooden toys to Christmas cookies.

Aesch: Starting at the church, the Christmas market in Aesch will snake through the alleys of the old town. As you walk past the ___ booths, you will undoubtedly hear the traditional sounds of the barrel organs. Samichlaus will be visiting the market on Sunday at 1:30 PM.

Einsiedeln: Not too many Christmas markets have a monastery as a back-drop. In Einsiedeln, there will not only be a gigantic Christmas tree in front of the Benedictine monastery, but also the world's largest nativity scene featuring 450 hand-carved figures. The nativity scene is open from noon until 5 PM.

Aarburg: Go here to witness the floating lights on the Aare river. Another cool experience will be the arrival of St. Nikolaus with a bell lyra. Stick around the Aarequai at 6 PM to catch these men dressed in red robes. (aarburg leuchtet)

Andermatt: From 11 AM to 7 PM, the fifth annual Christmas market will take hold in Andermatt. There will be a nostalgic merry-go-round as well as a gospel choir performance scheduled for 3 PM. Also, free ice-skating for everyone!

Ascona: A small but fine Christmas market along Via Borgo. It will be open on Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM as well as on Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

St. Nicholas is Coming to Geneva

Brienz: Brienz lives up to its wood carving tradition with live demonstrations at the Christmas market. There will also be a Christmas train, a merry-go-round and even ice carving demonstrations. The market will be open on Saturday from noon until 9 PM and on Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Montreux: Christmas at Chillon Castle is unique in that the market and activities are in tune with the medieval setting. A market, farm animals, workshops, storytelling and performances will make a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site a memorable advent experience for all ages. The event repeats on the weekends of Dec 7 to 8 and Dec 14 to 15.

Bern (Münsterplatz): This Christmas market in front of the cathedral uses renewable energy for all the lights and decorations. How cool is this? Visit the market on Dec 6 to meet St. Nikolaus, the Swiss Santa!

Bremgarten: This Christmas market with more than 300 Swiss vendors sprawls through the historic old town. For this year's 25th anniversary, there will be an ice-skating rink. (Christchindlimärt)

Uster: Since last year, the Uster Christmas market is organized as a small village. The booths are arranged around the "Uster on Ice" ice-skating rink at the Stadtpark. As a special "highlight" this year, Switzerland's largest ferry's wheel will allow for a new perspective from 50 meters above ground.

Fribourg: Experience this special annual event when Fribourg honors its patron saint, St. Nicholas. Learn more about the tradition, including the song that was composed especially for the St. Nicholaus parade. The start of the parade at St. Michael is set for about 5 PM. Estavayer-le-Lac: The covered Christmas market in Estavayer-le-Lac is especially beautiful due to the medieval setting of the old town. This is also the kick-off of the nativity exhibit, showcasing more than 60 cribs made by locals.
