One of the last few days of summer called for a quick trek up somewhere. And since we live close to Bern, we decided to hike to the top of the Lueg hill in Affoltern im Emmental!
Our drive across the winding roads of the Emmental valley took us by charming farmhouses. Just 20 minutes later, we were standing at the foot of the Lueg! I recommend visiting the Lueg hill because once you are on top, you get a stunning view of the countless ornamental mountains - including the Jura and the Alps.
It is also a great place to have a picnic or barbeque your own meat and sausages. For those who like to delve deep into history, the Lueg Memorial is of great significance. It was built in memory of the 54 Bernese cavalrymen who fell victim to one of the deadliest flu epidemics of the world in the year 1918.
My advice: Take your favorite book there and have a quiet read... Soak in not just the sun, but history as well!
