High above the rooftops of Zürich, a lucky audience will be enjoying those lush summer nights at a pop-up virtual reality cinema.
The train ride to the top of Uetliberg, a summer drink and a BBQ will be your last “real” experiences for the hours that follow. That’s because at the Virtual Reality Openair Cinema in Zürich, you will have to check reality at the door. In exchange, you will receive a set of VR goggles and HD earphones which will take you to another world.
An immersive VR experience in Zürich
Depending on the night you pick, a variety of short films from cartoons to documentaries will be bundled into each performance. With space for 150 viewers and two performances per night, it is safe to say that Uetliberg will be turned into Switzerland’s VR hot spot this summer. And thanks to their partner, ewz, there will be lawn chairs, popcorn and smartphone charging stations.
Among the available VR films, we picked the “Best of” selection. For instance, one of the films is called “My Beautiful Home”, an immersive journey into a slum in Africa. We are told that with the latest VR equipment there, the content will be synchronized to the degree that each viewer experiences moments of joy, fear, love or tension at the very same moment. And finally, there will be a special theme night for Swiss National Day with screenings of Swiss VR content.
On days when the weather is not cooperating, the cinema will move to an indoor location at Uto Kulm.
