TimeCrafters – The Intricate Art of Watchmaking

TimeCrafters - Jaeger-LeCoultre

Sometimes, you have to gain a distance in order to learn to appreciate things. Or so it seemed last weekend when we visited the TimeCrafters luxury watch show in New York City.

Of course, we used our modern day smartphone to navigate to the Park Avenue Armory. As we entered this impressive 19th century building through the gigantic front door, it immediately became clear that this is the perfect setting for an exhibit honoring timepieces!

Smartphone aside, we were drawn to the more than a dozen booths featuring luxury Swiss watchmakers from Christophe Claret to Hublot and Jaeger-Le Coultre.

Accurate to the Second

The Duometre à Spherotourbillon from Jaeger-LeCoultre stuck out as a masterpiece at TimeCrafters 2014: Its complicated internal mechanisms allow for a setting of the time by the second. This incredible feature, packed into a sleek looking watch case, is Swiss precision at its best.

Ironically, I had to travel all the way from Zürich to New York City to gain an appreciation of luxury timepieces. High on my list for this year is a research trip to the Jura region, where I would like to delve deeper into the intricate art of watchmaking...
