The Zytglogge is iconic. The arcades are world-famous. The coffee is excellent.

Bern is Switzerland's federal capital and one of Europe's most walkable UNESCO-listed city centers. Six kilometers of covered arcades, a lazy loop of the Aare, and more fountains than you can count. Which means plenty of walking, plenty of café stops, and at some point, a real need for a toilet.

Trust me, Swiss locals will quite literally strategize over bathroom breaks when they visit a city such as Bern. A sip from one of the legendary drinking fountains? Only if there's a WC nearby...

The "Friendly Toilet" Network in Bern

The Nette Toilette ("Friendly Toilet") program in Bern is a legitimate city-sponsored program. A dozen participating businesses are displaying a sticker, allowing anybody to use their in-house toilet free of charge. There are no strings attached - I've tested this myself.

Two minutes from the Zytglogge. Fully accessible, and even with a baby changing table.

The Münsterplattform WC is underrated

Directly next to the cathedral on the terrace. It's usually far less crowded than the station, and has stunning views of the Bernese Alps!

Loeb department store is free in the city center

Loeb at Spitalgasse 47 has free, clean toilets on the upper floors. No purchase is required, but it is (obviously) only open during shopping hours.

Walk the arcades with lots of cafés and bars

Bern's covered Lauben arcades shelter dozens of shops and cafés. Most have accessible restrooms during business hours; just ask politely.

The Rose Garden WC is free after the uphill walk

This public toilet is perfectly placed after the climb from the Bärengraben bear pit. Enjoy the birdeye views of the snaking River Aare afterwards.

For a federal flush, try a fancy hotel lobby

Walk into the lobbies of Hotel Schweizerhof Bern or Hotel Bellevue Palace to use the bathroom. Both are steps from Bundesplatz.
