Corpus Christi Procession (Appenzell)

Jun 15, 2017 @ 8:15 AM - 1:00 PM

The Corpus Christi procession is an old, colorful tradition and it contributes to Appenzell being one of the culturally richest regions in Switzerland.

In most other cantons in Switzerland, it is a normal working day. But the residents of Appenzell Innerrhoden spend their holiday with a festive parade celebrating the Catholic sacrament – the Holy Eucharist. Local church members, authorities, cadets and others march side by side and create a fairytale-like picture on the streets.

The gorgeous costumes, especially the sumptuous, baroque-like women's dresses, make the procession an impressive experience for the spectators.

The procession starts and ends at the St. Mauritius church, filling it with masses of people that look as if they came from back when the church was built. Corpus Christi in Appenzell looks and feels like another world.
